Hints for Reading Practice

1 Most of us can find 15 minutes or half an hour each day for some regular activity. For example, one famous surgeon always spent 15 minutes reading something before he went to sleep each day. Whether he went to bed at 10 p.m. or 2:30 a.m. made no difference.

2 "Speed Reading" courses teach students how to read more quickly. In such courses, teachers often ask students to find out how many words a minute he is reading. You can do this too: look at your watch every 5 or 10 minutes and write down the page number you have reached.

3 Obviously, you should not increase your reading speed if you do not understand what you are reading. If you find something you don&39;t understand in the book, or you cannot remember clearly the details of what is said, why not read the chapter again?

4 Take four or five pages of an interesting book you happen to be reading now. Read these pages as fast as you can. Don&39;t worry about whether you understand or not. If you keep doing this"lightning speed" reading for a period of time, you will usually find that your normal speed has increased.

5 Most paragraphs in an article have a topic sentence that expresses the central idea. The opening paragraph often suggests the general direction and content of the article, while paragraphs that follow expand or support the first. The closing paragraph often gives a summary of the most important points of the article.

Paragraph 2 __________ 查看材料

A.The organization of an article

B.Check your reading speed

C.A way to increase your reading speed

D.Check your understanding

E.Read something every day

F.Read extensively

回答题Part B

Directions:

Read the texts from a magazine article in which five people talked about the future of reading.

For questions 61-65, match the name of each person (61-65) to one of the statements (A-G)given below. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.

Paul:

I think books will be more affordable. They are pretty expensive. Publishers are so silly be-cause they focus on "We"re not going to be selling so many hardcover books at $26. " But you"re going to sell infinitely more electronically, so what are you complaining about? I view it as a grea-ter opportunity. My e-reader is great because I travel, and I don"t want to carry a billion things with me.

David:

I don"t own an e-reader, and I"ve never read a page on an e-reader. I do everything I can to avoid more screen time. Not to play down the value of a physical book, when it comes to somebody investing in one, it"s something you want to keep. You have to give readers a choice, between a ric- her experience with physical books, and a more lifeless experience through an electronic reader.

James:

The new immigrants don"t shoot the old inhabitants when they come in. One technology tends to supplement rather than substitute. How you read is not as important as: Will you read? Will you read something that"s a book-the sustained train of thought of one person speaking to another?

Search techniques are embedded in e-books that invite people to dip into something rather than follow a full train of thought.

Alex:

We"ve maintained in the last few years there will be fewer bookstores. We have the best busi-ness model in the world. Books are still a majority of what we sell in stores, but they are becoming less and less. About 50 percent of physical books are sold in non-bookstore outlets, like drugstores and club stores. There are people with agendas in this industry, but the physical book is going no- where.

William:

E-readers take out the paper middleman and give me what I want from books: the words. My e-reader has allowed me to read more than ever. When I travel I can take five books with me all without cutting down a single tree or using any extra jet fuel. Books made of paper can be beautiful, but they are never as beautiful as the words in the best of them.

Now match the name of each person (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement.

Note: there are two extra statements.

Statements

Paul 查看材料

A.I prefer physical books to e-books.

B.E-books are environmentally friendly.

C.The market for physical books is shrinking.

D.What counts is not how but how well you read.

E.E-reading will benefit, rather than harm, publishers.

F.The price of hardcover books will be greatly lowered.

G.Non-bookstore outlets add to the growth of physical books.

·Read the article below about e·mail phone and the questions on the opposite page.

·For each question(13-18),mark one letter(A。B。C,or D)on your Answer Sheet.

Do you send and receive more phones calls or e—mails? If your answer is e—mail.or you wish it were, then a new breed of telecommunication devices called an e—mail phone or Internet phone may soon find its way into your kitchen or living room.Essentially,an e—mail phone,or e—phone for short.is the merger of telephone and computer. With most of these new screen phones, that means being able to read and reply to electronic mall directly from the phone, without starting up(or even owning)a PC.With some,it also means being able to search through the web to make vacation plans or research homework assignments though at slow speeds and on a rather small screen. And you can still make phone calls, too.

No computer experience is required to use an e-phone.Most let you sign up with Internet Service Provider(ISP),which typically charges about$20 per month.Once you’re past tllis tedious work and enter the account information into the phone, you can check your e—mail from either your computer or phone.

To assess your e—mail account from one of these phones, you typically have to select e—mail service from a menu.Phones with touch screens have an icon(图标)for that on the opening screen. For other phones, you press one of the buttons lining the bottom or sides of the display, much as with an ATM machine. The phone then calls your ISP.When the ISP picks up,the phone automatically transfers your account name and password.Once accepted, the ISP will start sending the phone your messages.By touching the item you want to read or hitting a button next to it,the message will be displayed.Once you’ve read it,you can reply to the message, move onto the next one,or,like most phones, delete the message from your account. You can check your e—mail manually, but most e-phones call also be set to check several times a day automatically. In automatic mode, the phone fla.shes to tell you mail is waiting. If you happen to be using the phone when it is scheduled to check for e—mail, the phone will automatically try again when the line is free.

One serious drawback to e—mail by phone is that it cannot receive(or send)attached files。whether they contain documents or graphics. Some phones will attempt to display simple text files as part of the message, but other types of files will appear as gibberish(乱码),or not at all.If you share the e-mail account with a PC and don’t delete the message, however, you can usually retrieve the message and file on your computer.

An e-mail phone is an improved device of telecommunication in that 查看材料

A.it can record a message in the form. of e—mails.

B.it can be used to receive and send e—mails.

C.it can be connected with computers.

D.it can be used to visit websites

Stars in Their Eyes

The ScientifiC.American Book of the Cosmos edited by David Levy, Macmillan, 20, ISBN 0333782933

Previous generations of scientists would have killed to know what we know. For the first time in history, we have a pretty good idea of the material content of the Universe, our position within it and how the whole thing came into being.

In these .times of exploding knowledge there is a definite need to take stock and assemble what we know in a palatable (受欢迎的) form._________ (46)

The essays in The ScientifiC.American Book of the Cosmos have been selected by David Levy, co-discoverer of Comet Shoemaker-Levyg, which in 1994 stnaek Jupiter with the violence of several full-scale nuclear wars. _________ (47) This is certainly a great collection of essays, but it is

not, as the book promises, a seamless (完美的,无缝隙的) synthesis of our current knowledge.

Nobody can fault the range of articles Levy has included. There are essays on the planets, moons and assorted debris (碎片) in the Solar System, and on our Galaxy, the Milky Way: _________ (48)

The contributors, too, are stars in their own fields. Not many books can boast chapters written by such giants as Erwin Schrodinger and Francis Criekl My personal favorites are a piercingly clear essay by Albert Einstein on general relativity and an article by Alan Guth and Paul Steinhardt on the inflationary (膨胀的) Universe.

So much for the book"s content. But Levy has not succeeded in providing an accurate synthesis of our Current knowledge of the cosmos, which the book jacket promises. Gathering together previously publ!shed articles inevitably leaves subject gaps, missing explanations and so on.

_________ (49) But there isn"t one. In fact, surprisingly for a book so densely packed with infor-mation, there is no index.

Collecting essays in this way is clearly a good publishing wheeze (巧妙地主意). But thisapproach shortchanges the public, who would be better served by an account moulded into a seamless whole. _________ (50) However, for the next edition, please, please can we have an index?

回答(46)题 查看材料

A.Tegmark fears he may hold the record for the longest time taken to read one book.

B.In a more positive vein, this is a wonderful collection of essays to dip in and out of if you already have a good overview (概述) of current cosmiC.understanding.

C.Levy is an active astronomer and an accomplished writer, so you"d expect him to provide a broad and accurate picture of our current understanding of the cosmos.

D.ScientifiC.American has attempted to cater to this need by bringing together essays that have appeared in the magazine.

E.To some extent, these could have been plugged with a glossary (词表) of terms.

F.Also included are contributions on the world of subatomiC.particles, the origin of life on the Earth and the possibility of its existence elsewhere.
