第二节 短文理解1
阅读下面短文,从[A](Right)、[B](Wrong)、[C](Doesn't Say)三个判断中选择一个正确选项。
wenty years ago people had one telephone in the house or in the office. Today, people have telephones at home, in cars, in offices, almost everywhere. You can even see people talking into cell phones(手机) on the streets. Once I asked a newspaper reporter for his telephone number. He answered, "Which number do you want? Home number, work number, weekend number, or car number?"
Now there are even answering machines, but it seems that nobody likes them. For callers there is the problem of how to talk to them because it is very difficult to have a conversation with a ma- chine. For owners of answering machines, there are problems, too. What kind of message(信息) should be recorded(录音) for the caller? If the message is too short, like "This is an answering machine. Speak now", the caller may not have enough time to get ready. Others may be too long. One long message goes like this: "This is Nathan's answering machine. Please leave your name, telephone number, what you are like, name of your school or work place and your mother's first name. Speak now. "Probably, people will never call Nathan again.
Telephones develop very slowly.
A.Right
B.Wrong
C.Doesn't Say
听力原文:W: Good afternoon, Doctor Thomas's office.
M: Hello, my name is Nathan, and I was hoping I could come in today to see the doctor.
W: Are you a patient of Doctor Thomas?
M: Well, no. I'm here to have my vacation, I feel uncomfortable today, and the manager of the hotel where I'm staying suggested that I call you.
W: What is your problem?
M: Well, I got a serious headache and coughed all day.
W: Do you have a fever?
M: No, I can't feel that.
W: Do you have sore throat and runny nose?
M: Yes, I do, not very serious.
W: It seems you have caught flu. The doctor will be busy at the hospital until this evening. The earliest you could see him would be tomorrow morning at ten.
M: Tomorrow morning? Can't it be a little earlier? I just feel terrible.
W: I am sorry, Sir. Doctor Thomas really has no time to see you today.
M: Ok, I'll come in then.
W: That will be fine, and in the meantime you should drink more water and try to take it easy.

RE: Employee "Shadow" Day 2009
Armwar industries is participating in the National .lob Shadow Day 2009, a new program being implemented to introduce young people to various types of jobs and provide them with some first-hand experience through a one-day mentoring experience. Shadow Day is the perfect way to introduce today's youth—tomorrow's future employees—to the opportunities in an industry. Last year the hospitality industry introduced approximately 30,000 high school students to career opportunities In nearly 2,500 restaurants and hotels. This year over 100,000 students and 1,500 businesses will participate in the Job Shadowing program across the country. The program is being sponsored by the government and is being organized through the State Work Employment Agency. It involves students being paired with a workplace mentor who they will "shadow" through out the day on December 12. To get involved in the program, fill out a form. online at www.SWEA.org/ShadowDay or call us at 1 -800-8765-0987. We hope you'll take the time to get involved.

Subject: Questions on shadow day
Mr. Sommersby,
1 am writing to confirm that our company is joining this year's Job Shadow Day. Besides, I'd like to ask some questions we encounter during the preparation for the day.
Firstly, is there a limitation on the number of employees participating in the activity? Since the notice was posted, we have received many responses from our staff to volunteer on December 12. I was wonder if there is a limitation. If so, I would like to clarify things to my staff so as to prevent real disappointment.
Then, we got a list of students who are in the Shadow Day activity on www. SWEA. org, but how are the studenls going to be paired with employees? Do we pair by ourselves and then contact the each specific student or hand in a namelist of our employees to the organizer?
I would appreciate, a quick reply very much for the day is just around the corner and I prefer everything ready and successful. Thank you very much.
Regards,
Bridget Ellesmere
