Questions 下列各 are based on the following passage. I dont ever want to talk about bei
ng a woman scientist again. There was a time in my life when people askedconstantly for stories about what its like to work in a field dominated by men. I was never very good at telling thosestories because truthfully I never found them interesting. What I do fred interesting is the origin of the universe, theshape of space-time and the nature of black holes. At 19, when I began studying astrophysics, it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in theclassroom. But while earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as a post-doctor doing space research, the issue started tobother me. My every achievement--jobs, research papers, awards--was viewed through the lens of gender (性 别) politics. So were my failures. Sometimes, when I was pushed into an argument on left brain.versus (相对于)fight brain, or nature versus nurture (培育), I would instantly fight fiercely on my behalf and all womankind. Then one day a few years ago, out of my mouth came a sentence that would eventually become my reply toany and all provocations: I dont falk about that anymore. It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19and to realize that I didnt want to deal with gender issues. Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burdenon every female scientist? After all, I dont study sociology or political theory. Today I research and teach at Barnard, a womens college in New York City. Recently, someone asked mehow many of the 45 students in my class were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer:45. I know some 9fmY students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children. AndI dont dismiss those concerns. Still, I dont tell them "war" stories. Instead, I have given them this: the visual oftheir physics professor heavily pregnant doing physics experiments. And in turn they have given me the image of45 women driven by a love of science. And thats a sight worth talking about. Why doesnt the author want to talk about being a woman scientist again?

A.She feels unhappy working in male-dominated fields.

B.She is fed up with the issue of gender discrimination.

C.She is not good at telling stories of the kind.

D.She finds space research more important.

听力原文: The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems th
at four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image of unhappy teenagers locked in their rooms after endless family quarrels. An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past. "We were surprised by just how positive todays young people seem to be about their families," said one member of the research team. "Theyre expected to be rebellious and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds; they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. Theres more negotiation and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They dont want to rock the boat." So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. "My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me," says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. "I always tell them when Im going out clubbing. As long as they know what Im doing, theyre fine with it." Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. "Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as Id done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that." Questions 22 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard. 22. What is the popular image of teenagers today? 23. What do we know about teenagers according to the study? 24. What do we know about todays parents compared with parents of 30 years ago? 25. What is the passage mainly about?23.

A.They don"t want to make family decisions.

B.They don"t want to share family responsibility.

C.They don"t want to go boating with their family.

D.They don"t want to cause trouble in their families.

Every year it seems to me that more students worry about tuition. Student A I agree. And its hard to study full-time and hold down any kind of job. Student B Maybe you could qualify for some kind of student loan that you would repay after you finish studying. You should go to the financial aid office and see what the requirements are. Student A I suppose thats true. Sometimes I wish the cost of education was completely covered by the government. It would sure make my life easier. Student B Maybe, but somebody would still be paying for it. Just not you right now. And I am sure you dont want to pay higher taxes to cover the cost. Student A The real problem is that you just cant give everybody what they want. More services and programs always mean more taxes. Student B Dont you think thats true everywhere, and in a lot of different situations? Im sure were not the only ones who are worried about this. Student A Oh, I think its quite clear that a lot of people worry about this. Student B Yeah. Thats true. Everybody would like to have a good education and thus has to pay. 根据下面材料,回答下列各题。 University of York biologist Peter Mayhew recently found that
global warming might actually increase the number of species on the planet, contrary to a previous report that higher temperatures meant fewer life forms—a report mat was his own. In Mayhew’s initial 2008 study, low biodiversity among marine invertebrates(无脊椎动物)appeared to coincide with warmer temperatures on Earth over the last 520 million years. But Mayhew and his colleagues decided to reexamine their hypothesis, this time using data that were“a fairer sample of the history of life.”砌this new collection of material.they found a complete reversal of the relationship between species richness and temperature from what their previous paper argued:the number of different groups present in the fossil record was higher, rather than lower,durin9“greenhouse phases.” Their previous findings rested on an assumption that fossil records can be taken to represent biodiversity changes throughout history.Thisn’t necessarily the case.because there are certain periods with higher.quality fossil samples.and some that are much more difficult to sample well.Aware of this bias.Mayhew’s team used data that standardized the number of fossils examined throughout history and accounted for other variables like sea level changes that might influence biodiversity in their new study to see if their old results would hold up. Two years later, the results did not.But then why doesnt life increasingly emerge on Earth as our temperatures get warmer? While the switch may prompt some to assert that climate change is not hazardous to living creatures,Mayhew explained that the timescales in his team’s study are huge--over 500million years--and therefore inappropriate for the shorter periods that we might look at as humans concerned about global wanning. Many global warming concerns are focused on the next century. He said——and the lifetime of a species is typically one to 10 million years. “I do worry that these findings vill be used by the climate skeptic community to say‘look.Climate warming is fine。he said. Not to mention the numerous other things we seem to do to create a storm of threats to biodiversity—think of what habitat(栖息地)destruction, overfishing, and pollution can do for a species’viability(生存力).Those things,Mayhew explained, give the organisms a far greater challenge in coping with climate change than they would have had in the absence of humans. “If we were to relax all these pressures on biodiversity and allow the world to recover over millions of years in a warmer climate.then my prediction is it would be an improvement in biodiversity,”he said.So it looks like we need to curb our reckless treatment of the planet first,if we want to eventually see a surge in the number of species on the planet as temperatures get warmer. We dont have 500 million years to wait. What is the finding of Peter Mayhew’s recent study?

A.Higher temperature causes the low biodiversity of marine invertebrates.

B.Fossil record can represent a relatively believable history of life.

C.The number of fossils was higher during greenhouse phases.

D.Global warming might promote the richness of species on Earth.

ing to spend all my next year there, Id better start familiarizing myself with the culture. M: You mean you are accepted into the programme? W: Yes. M: Thats wonderful. You must be excited. W: Excited and nervous. You know I owe a lot to Professor Mercheno. He wrote a letter of recommendation for me and he bought me a set of practise tapes and a book which goes with them. Just so I can work on my basic conversation skills. M: How much Japanese can you understand? W: Not a lot at present. But I signed up for intensive Japanese this semester. M: I wish I were as talented as you are in foreign languages. Id like to study abroad. W: Then why dont you? The university has lots of overseas programmes that dont require any mastery of a foreign language. The tuition is about the same. You just have to be the kind of person who is receptive to new ways of looking at things and willing to adjust to a different kind of life style. M: I had assumed that all programmes require you to know a foreign language. I might check into this. W: You wont regret it. Questions 9 to 11 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 9. isor Hi, Quan, how are you doing? Quan Im doing great. How about you, Dr. Smith? Advisor Great! Pretty busy with students papers. Quan Its about the end of the semester. You must have a lot of papers to read. Advisor Yes. You are right. Thanks for coming in, Quan. Quan Dr. Smith. You wanted to see me? Is there some sort of problem? Im a bit worried. Advisor Well, not exactly a problem. Dont worry. Quan Is it about my paper? Advisor No, but there is something we need to discuss. I asked you to come here because I want to talk with you about your schedule. Quan My schedule? Is there anything wrong with my schedule? Advisor Eh...yes. About the courses youve already taken and the courses youve signed up to take next semester. Quan What about it? Advisor Its not exactly wrong, but its something we need to deal with. Let me lay it out for you...here it is...you see... Quan Yeah. Advisor Well, in your plan of study youve declared that you want to finish your masters degree in two and half years. Quan Thats right. Advisor Its been a year since your enrollment. But, you havent taken any core courses yet. Im just afraid that you may not be able to graduate in two and half years if you dont take any core courses from this semester on. Quan Dr. Smith. Actually, I dont know anything about core courses. How do they affect my graduation? Advisor You really dont know anything about core courses? Didnt anyone tell you anything about them? Thats weird. Quan No, I dont know. Advisor You should have been told about them the very first day you were enrolled. Core courses are the required courses you must take so as to obtain your masters degree and graduate. There are a total of five core courses you must take. Since they are not offered every semester, you have to make a plan about when to take them. Otherwise, Im afraid, you may not be able to graduate on time. Quan It sounds very serious. Thank you very much for reminding me. Advisor My pleasure. Quan In my case, I have to take as many core courses as possible every semester from now on. Is that right? Advisor Thats right. By the way, another important thing is that the department cannot offer you an assistantship for the next year and half because of the tight budget. You know, there are more and more students applying right now, but there arent many assistantships to be offered. Im sorry to tell you this. Quan Thats too bad. But thank you for telling me this. Its really important to me. Advisor And, as you told me before, you cannot afford the tuition to study here by yourself. Quan No, if I have no assistantship, there is no way for me to study here. So, I have to graduate on time. Dr. Smith, can you give me some suggestions on which courses I should take this semester? I have no idea which ones are easy and which ones are difficult. Advisor Well, the core courses such as Grammar and Socio-psycho Linguistics are relatively easy, because they are the most basic courses. The courses like Testing and Descriptive Linguistics are comparatively difficult. But, if you can first finish Grammar and Socio-psycho Linguistics, Testing and Descriptive Linguistics will become easier because you will have some background knowledge about them. Quan Thank you very much. I really appreciate your help. Advisor You are welcome. Now get ready to answer the questions. You may use your notes to help you answer. 30. What is the talk mainly about? 31. According to the talk, what are core courses? 32. According to the talk, what is the students problem? 33. According to the talk, what will happen to the student if he has no assistantship? 34. What does the advisor mean when he says this? Advisor You really dont know anything about core courses?
