SPECULATION ON THE ORIGIN OF THESE PACIFIC ISLANDERS BEGAN AS SOON AS OUTSIDERS ENCOUNTERED THEM; IN THE ABSENCE OF SOLID LINGUISTIC, ARCHAEOLOGICAL, AND BIOLOGICAL DATA, MANY FANCIFUL AND MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE THEORIES WERE DEVISED. PACIFIC ISLANDERS WERE VARIOUSLY THOUGHT TO HAVE COME FROM NORTH AMERICA, SOUTH AMERICA, EGYPT, ISRAEL, AND INDIA, AS WELL AS SOUTHEAST ASIA.The period discussed in the passage is referred toMANY OLDER THEORIES IMPLICITLY DEPRECATED THE NAVIGATIONAL ABILITIES AND OVERALL CULTURAL CREATIVITY OF THE PACIFIC ISLANDERS.The period discussed in the passage is referred toFOR EXAMPLE, BRITISH ANTHROPOLOGISTS G. ELLIOT SMITH AND W. J. PERRY ASSUMED THAT ONLY EGYPTIANS WOULD HAVE BEEN SKILLED ENOUGH TO NAVIGATE AND COLONIZE THE PACIFIC.The period discussed in the passage is referred toTHEY INFERRED THAT THE EGYPTIANS EVEN CROSSED THE PACIFIC TO FOUND THE GREAT CIVILIZATIONS OF THE NEW WORLD(NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA).The period discussed in the passage is referred toIN 1947 NORWEGIAN ADVENTURER THOR HEYERDAHL DRIFTED ON A BALSA-LOG RAFT WESTWARD WITH THE WINDS AND CURRENTS ACROSS THE PACIFIC FROM SOUTH AMERICA TO PROVE HIS THEORY THAT PACIFIC ISLANDERS WERE NATIVE AMERICANS(ALSO CALLED AMERICAN INDIANS). LATER HEYERDAHL SUGGESTED THAT THE PACIFIC WAS PEOPLED BY THREE MIGRATIONS: BY NATIVE AMERICANS FROM THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST OF NORTH AMERICA DRIFTING TO HAWAII, BY PERUVIANS DRIFTING TO EASTER ISLAND, AND BY MELANESIANS. IN 1969 HE CROSSED THE ATLANTIC IN AN EGYPTIAN-STYLE. REED BOAT TO PROVE EGYPTIAN INFLUENCES IN THE AMERICAS. CONTRARY TO THESE THEORISTS, THE OVERWHELMING EVIDENCE OF PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY, LINGUISTICS, AND ARCHAEOLOGY SHOWS THAT THE PACIFIC ISLANDERS CAME FROM SOUTHEAST ASIA AND WERE SKILLED ENOUGH AS NAVIGATORS TO SAIL AGAINST THE PREVAILING WINDS AND CURRENTS. LOOK AT THE FOUR SQUARES[The period discussed in the passage is referred to]THAT INDICATE WHERE THE FOLLOWING SENTENCE CAN BE ADDED TO THE PASSAGE. LATER THEORIES CONCENTRATED ON JOURNEYS IN THE OTHER DIRECTION. WHERE WOULD THE SENTENCE BEST FIT?

&8226;Read the article about letter of credit.

&8226;For each question 31--40, write one word in CAPITAL LETTERS on your Answer Sheet.

General View of Letter of Credits

The letter of CREDIT here referred (31) in this chapter is the commonly-used documentary letter of credit, the importance of (32) is to be discussed in the following.

A Letter of Credit is the most important method in international (33) . In domestic sales, the seller sometimes can deliver the goods with one (34) and get the payment with the other. In international sales, however, this case is out of (35) question. It takes a long time for the goods in (36) to reach the destination. The long period of transit and the different locations of the seller and the (37) make it difficult to exchange goods for money at the same time.

Usually, the seller will not be so foolish as to deliver the goods first before he can get the payment; likewise, the buyer will not be so foolish as to pay money first before he receives the goods in good (38) . Then it seems that the international transaction is not possible. The contradictory interests of the seller arid the buyer that are likely to obstruct the international transaction can be resolved by adopting modes of payments which can give (39) to the seller and the buyer. The widely accepted way is to use documentary letter of credit with the bank taking part as an intermediary. The documentary letter of credit is one of the safest payment modes available to the seller. In (40) , this is a way of paying the seller that imparts some degree of security to both parties.

The war was the most peaceful period of my life. The window of my bedroom faced south-east
. I always woke up with the first light and, with all the responsibilities of the previous day melted, felt myself rather like the sun, ready to shine and feel joy. Life never seemed so simple and clear and full of possibilities as then. I stuck my feet out under the sheets--I called them Mrs. Left and Mrs. Right--and invented dramatic situations for them in which they discussed the problems of the day. At least Mrs. Right did; she easily showed her feelings, but I didn't have the same control of Mrs. Left, so she mostly contented herself with nodding agreement.

They discussed what Mother and I should do during the day, what Santa Claus should give a fellow for Christmas, and what steps should be taken to brighten the home. There was that little matter of the baby, for instance. Mother and I could never agree about that. Ours was the only house in the neighborhood without a new baby, and Mother said we couldn't afford one till Father came back from the war because it cost seventeen and six. That showed how foolish she was. The Geneys up the road had a baby, and everyone knew they couldn't afford seventeen and six. It was probably a cheap baby, and Mother wanted something really good, but I felt she was too hard to please. The Geneys' baby would have done us fine. Having settled my plans for 'the day, I got up, put a chair under my window, and lifted the frame. high enough to stick out my head. The window overlooked the front gardens of the homes behind ours, and beyond these it looked over a deep valley to the tall, red-brick house up the opposite hillside, which were all still shadow, while those on our side of the valley were all lit up, though with long storage shadows that made them seem unfamiliar, stiff and painted.

The boy usually felt ________ early in the morning.

A.frightened

B.cheerful

C.worded

D.puzzled
