SECTION B PASSAGES
Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.
听力原文: Do you know how astronauts act while whirling through space? Their food comes in plastic tubes, and they eat it from the tubes. Why? Spacecraft food must be light and easy to store. It must also be non-spoilable. Many of the foods made for eating in a spaceship have been a success. In fact, everyone may soon be able to have them!
Scientists have learned to keep some foods from spoiling by removing the oxygen from them. This is done by pumping nitrogen gas into them, forcing nearly all the oxygen out. Without oxygen, bacteria cannot grow, nor can the foods spoil.
Freeze-drying is another way to keep food from spoiling. First the foods are frozen. Then they are dried. Fruits, vegetables, meat, and even ice-cream can be freeze-dried. Years later, you can just add milk or water, and they're ready to be eaten. And freeze-dried foods need no refrigeration!
Besides non-spoilable foods, scientists can now make foods from non-food materials. Coal, gas, and other non-foods have been turned into foods. By treating these materials with bacteria, scientists can produce rich proteins.
Experts say that four out of five of the world's people do not eat enough protein. Man-made proteins could help people in needy areas. But it should be a long time before we sit down to a bowl of coal and a glass of gas.
The best title for this selection is
A.Food from Coal and Gas
B.Non-spoiling and New Foods
C.Spacecraft Food
D.The Shortage of Food

听力原文: Human beings enjoy challenges. Many of them like physical challenges. They ask themselves questions like these: How fast can I run ? How high can I climb? How deep can I dive? How far can I swim? How long can I hold my breath? How much can I lift? How high can I jump? Because people enjoy challenges, they like to play sports and watch other people play sports. They like climbing, running, diving, lifting, jumping, and so on. Every four years millions of people all over the world enjoy the international sports competitions called the Olympics.
There are challenges that are not physical challenges. There are social and intellectual challenges, too. Leonardo Da Vinci, who lived in Italy during the fifteenth century, enjoyed every possible challenge. He was an artist and painted the well-known picture, the Mona Lisa. He was an inventor who invented a device to let people breathe under water. He was a scientist, and he learned a great deal about human anatomy.
Another kind of challenge faced the Egyptians between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago when they decided to build the first pyramid. They used six million tons of rock. That is enough to build a ten-foot wall around all of France. Four hundred thousand men worked for twenty years to build it.
So, for thousands of years, people accept challenges. Today we still have many challenges before us. Medical science faces the challenges of conquering the many diseases which still attack human beings. Engineers and planners must build new cities and new kinds of transportation. Scientists must develop new forms of energy. And many of us are interested in the challenge of space. We live in an age of challenge.
(30)
A.Intellectual challenge.
B.Social challenge.
C.Physical challenge.
D.Economic challenge.

听力原文: There were several important discoveries in the early part of last century that helped geologists develop a more accurate picture of the earth's interior. The first key discovery had to do with seismic waves. Remember they are the vibrations caused by earthquakes. Well, scientists found that they travel thousands of miles through the earth's interior. This finding enabled geologists to study the inner parts of the earth. You see, the studies revealed that these vibrations were of two types: compression, or P waves, and shear, or S waves. And researchers found that P waves travel through both liquids and solids, while S waves travel only through solid matter. In 1906, a British geologist discovered that P waves slowed down at a certain depth but kept traveling deeper. On the other hand, S waves either disappeared or were reflected back. So he concluded that the depth marked the boundary between a solid mantle and a liquid core. Three years later, another boundary was discovered that was between the mantle and the earth's crust. There is still a lot to be learned about the earth. For instance, geologists know that the core is hot. Evidence of this is the molten lava that flows out of volcanoes. But we are still not sure what the source of the heat is.
What is the important discovery about seismic waves mentioned by the instructor?
A.They occur at regular intervals.
B.They can withstand great heat.
C.They travel through the Earth's interior.
D.They can record the Earth's internal temperature.
According to the passage, why was John Glenn's flight considered so successful?
A.It was the first time a rocket had reached orbit and returned.
B.NASA had finally learned how to stay in orbit for a long time.
C.The astronauts were able to move outside the spacecraft.
D.He was able to land on the Moon's surface for the first tim

Schooling and Education
It is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get an education.Nevertheless,it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important.Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schoolin9. Education knows no bounds. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning? The agents of education can range from a revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist.
Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education quite often produces surprises.A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions.People are engaged in education from infancy on.Education, then,is a very broad。inclusive term. It is a lifelong process,a process that starts long before the start of school.and one that should be an integral part of one’s entire life.Schooling,on the other hand,is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next.
Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time.take as.signed seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks,do homework, take exams.and soon. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the workings of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their elasses the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling.
