Key James, Secretary of Health and Human Resources in the Virginia State government, loves

to turn the tables on those who don't think it's possible to be middle-class, conservative, educated and still be truly black. Once, during an abortion debate, a woman in the audience angrily told James she was so middle-class she didn't have a clue about real African American life. "If you understood what these women go through," the woman said, "you would realize that abortion is their only choice."

James then asked the woman to consider a poor black mother on welfare. She already has four children and an alcoholic husband who has all but abandoned the family. Now she discovers another child is on the way. "How would you counsel that woman?" asked James.

"Have an abortion," the woman responded. "That child would have a very poor quality of life."

"I have a vested interest in your answer," James said. "The woman I described was my mother. I was the fifth of six children born into poverty. And, in case you're interested, the quality of my life is just fine!"

Kay James ______.

A.is not a black

B.is a poor black mother

C.has five brothers and sisters

D.has a hard life

听力原文: United Nations records show people the world over are getting older. This is due to better medicine and more food, even in developing countries. Another global statistic: there are fewer younger people able to provide health care and other services for the elderly. Other U.N. statistics show that by the year 2050, people 60 years or older will account for half of the increase in the world's population. The United States is already experiencing nursing shortages and expects other staffing shortages in health Care in the coming years. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice described this trend as one of the greatest challenges that most nations will face this century. "Nations around the world are taking notice of the challenges of aging, but too many are still wrestling with them independent of one another, when we all stand to benefit from sharing our common solutions to these common problems:" Secretary Rice said one of the key goals of the summit was to open international discussions on this trend and to encourage research to provide the answers to the challenges posed by global aging.

According to United Nations records, people all over the world are getting older because of______.

A.good health care and other services

B.fewer and fewer challenges and pressures

C.more international discussions between countries

D.better medicine and more food

Soviet-American Relations

In the fall of 1946. President Truman asked for a comprehensive study of Soviet- American relations, which he knew would be the central problem of American foreign policy. The result was an important state paper prepared through the Secretary of State(国务), the Secretary of War. the Attorney General(检察长). the Secretary of the Navy, Fleet Adrmiral(海军司令) Leahy (who had been Roosevelt's chief military adviser), the Joint Chiefs of Staff(参谋长联席会议主席). Ambassador Edwin W.Pauley (in charge of negotiating postwar reparations), the Director of Central Intelligence(中央情报局局长), and other persons with special knowledge of foreign affairs. The document was imposing in its scope and depth, comprising nearly a hundred thousand words and divided into an introduction and six sections. It dealt with Soviet foreign policy, Soviet-American agreements, Soviet violations of its agreements with the U. S.,conflicting views on reparations, Soviet activities affecting American security, and U.S. policy toward the Soviet Union.

This study Truman asked for was drafted on the premise (前提) that only through an accurate understanding of the Soviet Union would the U. S. be able to make and carry out policies that would re-establish international order and protect the U. S. at all times. The key, according to the study; was to realize' that Moscow's leaders adhered to the Marxist theory of ultimate destruction of capitalist states by communist states, but that they sought to postpone the inevitable conflict while they strengthened and prepared the Soviet Union for its clash with the Western democracies: The study said Moscow's main concern regarding the other nations of Western Europe was to prevent the formation of a Western bloc (集团). It noted, too, that Red Army troops and Russian planes in combat readiness outnumbered American units opposite them in Germany, Austria, and Korea in overwhelming strength, placing U.S.forces literally at the mercy of the Soviet government.

第 36 题 The text associates President Truman with_________

A.peace with honor.

B.anti-Communist sentiment

C.the long-standing Cold, War

D.Western imperialism (帝国主义)
