听力原文: April Fool's Day started in the sixteenth century in Europe. Before that time, New Year's Day was celebrated on April 1st. Then a new calendar was introduced called the Gregorian calendar. January 1st became the first day of the year, but many people did not know about it. So those who continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April 1st were laughed at. They were called fools.

Nowadays we play jokes on people on April 1st. For example, someone might put salt in the sugar container so another person could "accidentally" put it in their coffee. Or someone might change the time on another person's alarm clock so that person would unknowingly wake up earlier or later than planned. Or maybe a person would tell a lie to make someone else shocked. After we play the trick, we say "April Fool." Then the poor person realizes he was fooled. In many countries newspapers and the other media participate with false headlines or news stories. It is generally done in the spirit of fun and doesn't cause any real harm to anyone. Do you have any great jokes to play on others? Try it out an April 1st. Just don't forget to say "April Fool" when the other person begins looking a little confused.

(23)

A.Play jokes on others.

B.Say "April Fool" to others.

C.Celebrate the New Year.

D.Celebrate the adoption of calendar.

However, four out of five divorced people do not stay single. They get married a second time to new partners. Sociologists tell us that in the twenty-first century most American people will marry three or four times in one life-time. Alvin Toffler, an American sociologist, calls this new social form. of serial marriages. In his new book Fortune Shock, Toffler gives many reasons for this change in American marriage. In modem society, people's marriages don't stay the same for very long. Americans frequently change their jobs, their homes: and their circle of friends. So, the person who was a good husband or wife ten years ago is sometimes not as good ten years later. After some years of marriage, a husband and wife can feel that their lives have become very different, and they don't share the same interest any more. For this reason, Toffler says, people in the twenty-first century will not plan to marry only one person for an entire lifetime. They will plan to stay married to one person for perhaps five or ten years, and then marry another. Most Americans will expect to have a "marriage career" that includes three or four marriages.

(30)

A.Marriage that continues for many years without divorce.

B.Marriage that can easily end in divorce.

C.People will marry three or four times in one life-time.

D.Divorced people don't stay single.

Peering into the 21st century, authorities on the future see extraordinary changed. New sc
ientific breakthroughs will allow machines to take on more tasks that human brain has traditionally done.

Computers, which once only remembered data, will make more decisions. Machines that today tell doctors what symptoms the patients have may soon be recommending whether or not to perform. surgery as well. Others will design new buildings after questioning buyers about their preferences. Increasingly, human thought processes and even values are being programmed into computers, according to Earl Joseph, president of a consulting firm. "Imagine machines which are smarter and more intelligent than humans and, with their embedded(植入的) initiative, can't wait to tell you about it," he says.

In everyday life, the future will mean talking directly to computers without pushing buttons. Just tell a toaster, stove or other kitchen device what to do, and it will hear the message. The oven may even decide itself how long to cook the roast. Tell the television, "I want to watch Channel 12 at 8 p.m., but store the show for next week," and the job will be done.

The computer will talk back, too. Already some soft-drink machines complain loudly if you don't deposit enough cash. At home, a bedside machine may someday tell you, "You forgot to turn off the basement light."

Away from home, the automobile of the future will think for itself. Scientists predict that drivers will feed destinations into a computer that will then explain what route to take and even tell where parking spaces are available. A city's traffic-control system might instruct the car's computer how fast to go in heavy traffic and whether to change lanes.

This passage mainly discusses ______.

A.the history of computers

B.the different functions of computers

C.the computer in the 21st century

D.scientific breakthroughs in the 21st century

听力原文:M: Are you ready for the trip to the museum in the Big Apple? I can hardly wait.

W: The Big Apple? What are you talking about?

M: The Big Apple is the nickname for New York City. You are going to New York with us, aren't you?

W: Yes, I'm going. I'm especially looking forward to seeing the Museum of Modern Art. There's a special show of 20th century American painters there. But, tell me, where did the nickname the Big Apple come from?

M: The jazz musicians of the 1920's are responsible for the name. When they played a concert in a city, they called that city an apple. Of course, New York was the biggest city in the country and the best place for a jazz concert. So, the musicians called it the Big Apple.

W: Amazing! New York is such a fascinating place and it even has an interesting nickname, one that it's had for more than 50 years.

Who gave New York its nickname?

A.Artists.

B.Musicians.

C.Grocers.

D.Tour guides.

听力原文: Today most astronomers accept the notion that groups of stars that make up the u
niverse are all moving farther and farther away from each other. but until very recently this idea of an expanding universe was not a theory most European scholars believed in. Since ancient times and up to about thel7th century most of these scholars thought the size of the universe have remained unchanged Since the moment of its creation or perhaps forever, with all the stars remaining more or less in place in relation to each other. But that Was challenged in the late 17th century by Izic Newton's idea of gravity as a force of attraction, which contradicted the idea of a university that is static, unchanging. If gravity causes all the stars out there in space to attract each other as Newton said, then they could remain essentially motionless. Sooner or later all the stars will fall in absorb each other, well, scientists then propose a new model, taking Newton's theory into account, they didn't want to abandon the idea of motionless stars, but for this model to work, so the stars won't fall in each other, they had to modify Newton's law of gravity, so they theorize that for distance as large as those between stars, the gravitation force repels rather attracts. As you might guess, this other contradictions. But this is prettily resolved in the past centuries by currently accepted theory, which says the universe is continuously expanding.

What did most European scholars believe before 17th century about-the size of the universe?

A.That it can't be measured.

B.That it doesn't change.

C.That it's getting smaller.

D.That it's rapidly increasing.

A large, detached (独立的)house not only ensures privacy. It is also a status symbol. The “magnificent home” is set in a big garden. Of course, this kind of house is an unrealistic dream for most people. But even a small detached house, surrounded by a garden, gives the required suggestion of rural life which is dear to the hearts of many British people. Most people would be happy to live in a cottage (村舍),and if this is a thatched (茅草的)cottage, suggestive of a pre-industrial age,so mush the better.

Most people try to avoid living in a block of flats (what the Americans call ’’apartment blocks”). Flats, they feel, provide the least amount of privacy. With a few exceptions, mostly in certain locations in central London, flats are the cheapest kind of home. The people who live in them are those who cannot afford to live anywhere else.

The dislike of living in flats is very strong. In the 1950s millions of poorer people lived in old, cold, uncomfortable nineteenth century houses, often with only an outside toilet and no bathroom. During the next twenty years many of them were given new “high rise” blocks of flats to live in which, with central heating and bathrooms, were much more comfortable and were surrounded by grassy open spaces. But people hated their new homes. They said they felt cut off from the world with all those floors up. They missed the neighborliness. They couldn’t keep a watchful eye on their children playing down there in those lovely green spaces. The new high-rise blocks quickly got broken. The lifts didin’t work. The corridors were dark. Windows were damaged and were not repaired. There was graffiti all over the walls.

British people prefer________.
