Bombay wasn't the ideal place to get sick -- not when my doctor, family' and friends were half a world away. I was alone, quite ill and had to delay my flight home. Luckily, when booking my ticket months before, l had shelled out (支付) for travel insurance. So my illness didn't cost me a cent.

It's actually pretty simple. A lot of unforeseen things can happen to you when you're traveling. Make sure you're prepared for all of them.

A good health insurance policy will get you proper medical attention anywhere in the world outside your home province -- at the insurance company's expense. The company will send you home if it is considered medically necessary and, if you're sick enough, it will send a nurse to accompany you. If you end up in a hospital and a doctor recommends that a family member come to your bedside, the insurance company will pay for k. You may even get pocket money to make your hospital stay more comfortable.

When I was sick in Bombay, I called the insurance company collect. It paid for a doctor (who came to my hotel room), all my medication, an extra night in the hotel and all my meals.

Picture it: the day before your big trip to Vancouver, you wake up with appendicitis (阑尾炎). You have no choice -- you have to cancel your trip. Your ticket, like most, is non-refundable and you can't make any changes. You're about to lose all the money you put out for the ticket -- unless you bought cancellation insurance beforehand.

Most travel plans include some form. of non-refundable element: your deposit, your flights, your cruise, your stay at the all-inclusive resort, That non-refundable portion is what you'll lose if you have to cancel your trip in the event that you get sick and you don't have cancellation insurance.

What happened to the author when he was in Bombay?

A.He fell ill and couldn't go home as scheduled.

B.He didn't buy travel insurance.

C.He spent a lot of money on curing his illness.

D.He couldn't get in touch with his family and friends.

Unfortunately sales results over the last year have failed to come up to our expectations. A number of factors have been responsible, but basically it is the result of too many companies chasing the microcomputer market which is no longer expanding as fast as it once was.

Looking at the past year in detail, it must be admitted that the sales have declined considerably over the period. Our market share in wholesales has dropped from 21% to only 10%. The lack of a good local distributor in Asia has meant that our sales of the Obec series have collapsed despite the huge jump in the microcomputer market there during the past year. Our dominance of that part of the market has been lost to Strong, but once we find a new distributor we should come back strongly.

Retail sales in general have been a problem. There has been a tendency for the big high street stores to concentrate on high volume turnover of a few fairly well-known makers. When they stopped promotion of the Obec 1500, sales slumped by 50%. We are negotiating a fresh marketing deal for the new Obec 1600. Once this is settled we expect a gradual rise in sales, which will be followed by a big TV advertising campaign at the appropriate time. What we are facing now is that we have not been able to push the Obec 1500 as much as we would have liked because of insufficient advertising.

Most of our advertising budget went on the promotion of the Obec Extra before last Christmas. Unfortunately we have failed consistently to find the proper marketing strategy for the Extra, which has not been sold to either the leisure or the business market.

The serious business market has performed worse than any other in the period under review. The main factor was the introduction of the new Legend 586 Plus, when sales reduced over a period of several months. With this background it is natural that sales of the Obec 1000 and 2000 have gone into a slide. They showed a slight upturn just after the introduction of the 586 Plus, only to crash again a few weeks later.

What purpose does this passage possibly serve?

A.A company introduction to its employees.

B.A market analysis for a specific industry to inform. a client.

C.An annual report of a company to direct its future decision.

D.A marketing strategy proposal for discussion.

Today I've returned to Chicago to discuss another issue relating to our security, and that's the need for us to improve the health security of American citizens.

And for the sake of health care for all Americans, we must reform. the medical liability system. For years, leaders of both political parties have talked about these reforms. Now is the time to get the job done.

We have just had a discussion with fellow citizens--some doctors and other professionals on medical care. I want to thank them for joining me today and sharing their stories and their concerns about the future of health care in our country.

One thing is for certain about health care in our country, that is, we've got the best health care system in the world, and we need to keep it that way. We've got great doctors in America. We're really good at research. We're developing technologies and medicines which are extending lives not only in our country, but also across the world.

To make sure we've got a good health care system today and tomorrow, we've got to make sure that no policy of the federal government will undermine (损坏) the system of private care in America. As folks who deliver that care, you know that we've got challenges in our system. We must address the challenges while not undermining the strengths of American medicine.

We have got a problem in America that we must deal with. Medical liability is not only a local problem, but a national issue that requires a national solution.

There are challenges in the health care system. We understand that in Washington. And we can answer those challenges with practical, sensible, compassionate (有同情心的) reforms. That is the charge before us, and that is the charge we must keep on behalf of the American people.

What is the problem being talked about for years in America?

A.Leaders of political parties.

B.Reforms of social security.

C.Security of American citizens.

D.Improvement of the health security.

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage

Among all the animals, the ape is most like human beings. Both people and apes have the similar brain structure, the similar nerve system, and the similar kind of blood.

There are four kinds of apes: the chimpanzee(黑猩猩), the orangutan(猩猩), the gorilla(大猩猩), and the gibbon(长臂猿). They live in the deep forests and warm tropical regions of Africa and of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia.

All apes are covered with brown, reddish-brown, or black hair everywhere on their bodies except their faces, feet, and hands. Their hands each have four fingers and a thumb that helps them grip things the way our thumbs help us. But they also have a thumb on each foot instead of a big toe. Thus they can hold things with their feet also. Having short, weak legs, apes do not walk on the ground very much. However, their arms are very strong. This enables them to swing from branches and travel very quickly from tree to tree.

These animals live in small family groups that move from place to place in search of vegetables and fruits. They also eat eggs, small animals, nuts, and insects. When they are tired, they build nests in the trees. But they rarely sleep there for more than a night or two. Then they move on to look for more food.

There are some differences among the following three kids of apes. The gibbon is never more than three feet high and weight only about fourteen pounds. The gorilla grows to be six feet tall and weight up to 600 pounds. The orangutan is smaller than the gorilla. It stands three to five feet tall and weight up to 200 pounds.

Chimpanzees are the smartest of all apes. They can be taught to sit at a table and eat, to dress themselves, and to do things that human children can do.

11. What does the first paragraph tell us?

[A] The ape looks like human beings most.

[B] People and the ape think alike.

[C] People and the ape behave alike.

[D] The ape is the most intellectual animal in the world.

12. Which of the following sentences is TRUE?

[A] All apes are brown or black.

[B] All parts of apes' bodies are covered with hair.

[C] Apes have weak legs but very strong arms.

[D] Apes' arms are strong enough to swim.

13. Apes build nests in the trees but seldom sleep there for more than a night or two because ________.

[A] They like to live in small family groups

[B] They like to move from place to place in search of more food

[C] They like to eat eggs, small animals, nuts and insects

[D] it rains too often in the deep forests

14. Among the three kinds of apes, ________.

[A] the gorilla is the biggest

[B] the gibbon is only three feet high but it is heavier than the orangutan

[C] the orangutan is smaller than the gorilla and cleverer than the gibbon

[D] the orangutan can stand up to a great height, but others cannot

15. The last paragraph tells us that ________.

[A] chimpanzees can do better than human children

[B] chimpanzees can do many things that human children cannot do

[C] human children can do many things that chimpanzees cannot do

[D] the intelligence of chimpanzees is similar to that of human children

People in the US can now carry an artificial intelligence (AI) around in their pocket, where it waits patiently to be told what to do.

Siri, an iPhone application that understands spoken commands and uses the web to carry them out,is a byproduct from a US military project to develop an artificially intelligent assistant.

Many people's experience of a "virtual assistant" may be limited to Microsoft's annoying classic Mr. Clippy. But in the week we spent together, my AI assistant has performed admirably in finding me restaurants, or the location of the nearest coffee shop. It wasn't even stumped when I asked "do I need my umbrella today?" coming straight back with the local weather forecast.

A typical command might be: "Reserve a table for two at a good French restaurant in San Francisco." Siri responds by presenting a list of top-rated restaurants that can be booked on OpenTable.com. If you say which time you want, it can book you a table without your lifting a finger.

In some ways Siri is just a fancy front-end to the 35 sites it can connect to, from taxi booking sites to movie review databases. But what's new is the way it can interpret the intentions of its master or mistress and use those sites to put them into action.

Doing that requires the ability to actually understand the meaning of words you use, not just passing on keywords blindly, says Siri co-founder Adam Cheyer.

"Book a four-star restaurant in Boston seems pretty straightforward," says Cheyer, "until you realise that Book is a city in the US, and Star is also a city in the US, and there are 13 Bostons, and Star is also the name of a restaurant."

To cut through what Cheyer calls the "combined explosion of interpretations", Siri uses your location, and the history of the commands you've given. It knows that "book" is most likely a command verb, unless you happen to be near the city of Book.

Siri attaches probabilities to the interpretation of each word and cross-reference(参照) with your location and other data, some of which you must provide yourself.

According to the passage, Siri is most probably ______.

A.still at its experimental stage

B.very popular with iPhone users

C.a US military assistant software

D.an artificial intelligence software
