听力原文:Narrator Listen to a conversation between a student and a professor. Student Go
od morning, Professor Thompson. I know your office hours are this afternoon, but I was wondering if you could spare me a few minutes now cause I have classes this afternoon. Professor Sure, Susan. What do you want to talk to me about? Student Well...to tell you the truth, Im not doing what I wanna do, I mean I dont like my major very much. Electrical Engineering isnt the sort of thing that attracts me. And I am at a loss what to do. What should I consider if I wanna choose another major? Professor Good Question! The most efficient way to pick a major would be to ask yourself: What do I love to do? One of my friends, for instance, started out as a microbiology major because he wanted to earn a comfortable living when he graduated. Then, in his junior year, he realized he loved history above all else, changed his major, and is now a history professor. Student Yeah, youre right, yknow, actually I was keen on Literature, but my mother, an engineer, talked me into taking this major. Professor Well, dont live someone elses dream. Its your time to be in college. Its your career in the making. Dont let someone else dictate what you should major in. My mother, a doctor, really pushed me to be a doctor. I cant think of anything Id hate more! Nothing is worse than to work for a career you dont like for your whole life! Student Yeah, but urn...um...the thing is...the thing is I am afraid of making a wrong decision again. Professor Remember, you dont have to decide right away. Go ahead and get those pesky general education requirements out of the way and, who knows- you might find something in your genned classes that you decide to major in! Most colleges dont insist that you declare a major right away, so take advantage of that. And remember, you can always change your mind. Thats my personal opinion. You can also ask other people, for example, advisors at our university whose job is to help you answer this question with their skills and expertise. You may either go to a faculty adviser who will provide ongoing advice and guidance on program selection, course registration, credit load, deadlines, and majors and minors, or to an academic adviser who can provide support, guidance, and appropriate referrals for students experiencing academic or personal difficulties while studying at our university. Student In fact, Ive already asked Dr. lasenza. But she had a different view. She said once youve chosen a major, then find the specific degree path that gets you out of school the fastest as possible. She said she knew a lot of people were going but what if I dont like it or I dont want to work in that field. Well to those questions the answer is easy: work at what you like but save as much time and money as possible on your degree. She also said that the majority of highly successful people didnt go to college, didnt finish college, or dont work in the area of their degree...so...um...it makes no sense to put any more money than necessary to obtain the degree. Once you graduate and move to your actual career that is where your real education will begin. Professor Eh...that might be reasonable, but what I want to say is: be honest with yourself. A potentially huge income in a field that...you know...will bore you or make you miserable isnt worth it. I forget who said it, but heres the best advice I can give: "Do what you love, and you will never work a day in your life!" Student Ok, I see, I guess now I have to ponder what really matters. Thank you very much, Professor, for your advice. Now get ready to answer the questions. You may use your notes to help you answer. 7. What are the speakers mainly discussing? 8. Why does the student visit the professor? 9. What does the professor imply when he says this? Professor Well, dont live someone elses dream. Its your time to be in college. Its your career in the making. Dont let someone else dictate what you should major in. 10. What can be inferred from Dr. lasenzas response to the student? Student She said...work at what you like but save as much time and money as possible on your degree. 11. What can be inferred about the professor when he says this? Professor Eh...that might be reasonable, but what I want to say is: be honest with yourself. A potentially huge income in a field that...you know...will bore you or make you miserable isnt worth it.Narrator Listen to part of a conversation between two students. Now get ready to answer the questions. You may use your notes to help you answer.

What are the speakers mainly discussing?

Smith is a 26-year-old single mother with a daughter. She was moving into her a-partment i
n Atlanta, Georgia early on the morning of March 12, when a man followed her and put a gun to her head. "I was opening my door and I felt really, really afraid," she said in a TV interview last week. The man was Brian Nichols, 33. He was suspected of killing three people on March 11 and later of killing a federal(联邦的)agent. The local police were searching for him. Nichols tied Smith up with tape, but released her after she repeatedly begged him not to take her life. "I told him if he hurt me, my little girl wouldnt have a mummy," she said. In order to calm the man down, she read to him from the purpose-driven life, a bestselling religious book. He asked her to repeat a paragraph about "what you thought your purpose in life was what talents were you given". And the two of them discussed this topic. Smith said, "I basically just talked to him and tried to gain his trust. " Smith said she asked Nichols why he chose her. "He said he thought I was an angel sent from God, and we were Christian sister and brother," she said. "And that he was lost, and that God led him to me. " She even cooked breakfast for the man before he allowed her to leave. She said Nichols was surprised when she made him breakfast and that the two of them watched television coverage(报道)that the police hunt for him. "I cannot believe thats me," Nichols told the woman. Then, Nichols asked Smith what she thought he should do. She said, "I think you should turn yourself in. If you dont, lots more people are going to get hurt. " Eventually, he let her go. isor Hi, Quan, how are you doing? Quan Im doing great. How about you, Dr. Smith? Advisor Great! Pretty busy with students papers. Quan Its about the end of the semester. You must have a lot of papers to read. Advisor Yes. You are right. Thanks for coming in, Quan. Quan Dr. Smith. You wanted to see me? Is there some sort of problem? Im a bit worried. Advisor Well, not exactly a problem. Dont worry. Quan Is it about my paper? Advisor No, but there is something we need to discuss. I asked you to come here because I want to talk with you about your schedule. Quan My schedule? Is there anything wrong with my schedule? Advisor Eh...yes. About the courses youve already taken and the courses youve signed up to take next semester. Quan What about it? Advisor Its not exactly wrong, but its something we need to deal with. Let me lay it out for you...here it is...you see... Quan Yeah. Advisor Well, in your plan of study youve declared that you want to finish your masters degree in two and half years. Quan Thats right. Advisor Its been a year since your enrollment. But, you havent taken any core courses yet. Im just afraid that you may not be able to graduate in two and half years if you dont take any core courses from this semester on. Quan Dr. Smith. Actually, I dont know anything about core courses. How do they affect my graduation? Advisor You really dont know anything about core courses? Didnt anyone tell you anything about them? Thats weird. Quan No, I dont know. Advisor You should have been told about them the very first day you were enrolled. Core courses are the required courses you must take so as to obtain your masters degree and graduate. There are a total of five core courses you must take. Since they are not offered every semester, you have to make a plan about when to take them. Otherwise, Im afraid, you may not be able to graduate on time. Quan It sounds very serious. Thank you very much for reminding me. Advisor My pleasure. Quan In my case, I have to take as many core courses as possible every semester from now on. Is that right? Advisor Thats right. By the way, another important thing is that the department cannot offer you an assistantship for the next year and half because of the tight budget. You know, there are more and more students applying right now, but there arent many assistantships to be offered. Im sorry to tell you this. Quan Thats too bad. But thank you for telling me this. Its really important to me. Advisor And, as you told me before, you cannot afford the tuition to study here by yourself. Quan No, if I have no assistantship, there is no way for me to study here. So, I have to graduate on time. Dr. Smith, can you give me some suggestions on which courses I should take this semester? I have no idea which ones are easy and which ones are difficult. Advisor Well, the core courses such as Grammar and Socio-psycho Linguistics are relatively easy, because they are the most basic courses. The courses like Testing and Descriptive Linguistics are comparatively difficult. But, if you can first finish Grammar and Socio-psycho Linguistics, Testing and Descriptive Linguistics will become easier because you will have some background knowledge about them. Quan Thank you very much. I really appreciate your help. Advisor You are welcome. Now get ready to answer the questions. You may use your notes to help you answer. 30. What is the talk mainly about? 31. According to the talk, what are core courses? 32. According to the talk, what is the students problem? 33. According to the talk, what will happen to the student if he has no assistantship? 34. What does the advisor mean when he says this? Advisor You really dont know anything about core courses? Didnt anyone tell you anything about them? Thats weird.Narrator Listen to part of a conversation between a student and an advisor. Now get ready to answer the questions. Rogets Thesaurus is a book, and a very famous book, too. If youve never heard of it, dont
worry. But once you know it, it is a friend for life. And dont worry about the title. Roget is the man who wrote it, and "thesaurus" is from a Greek word meaning "treasure". Rogets Thesaurus is not a book which you read from cover to cover. And it certainly isnt a book which fills you with excitement the moment you open it. But it is a book you keep coming back to year after year, again and again, if you are interested in ... words. It is a vast treasure house of information about words. Briefly, it works in the opposite way to a dictionary. When you use a dictionary you know the word, but you dont know what it means. You use a dictionary to find out the meaning of the word. When you use a thesaurus, or the Thesaurus, as there is only one, and that is Rogets Thesaurus, you know about what the word means, but you cant find exactly the word you want. So you look up a related word in the index at the back of the book, then turn to the group or category of words with that meaning, and, well ... if youre lucky, youll soon have found your missing word. Rogets Thesaurus was first published in 1852, and in the next 125 years, that is by 1977, had sold over thirty million copies. Roget himself was a most remarkable man. He was already seventy when he wrote the book, and had spent a most active life as a scientist, physician and engineer. He had made several discoveries, and had published an important report on Londons water supply, which at that time(1827)was very polluted. His thesaurus was a hobby, or a sideline—something to do in his retirement. Indeed, in 1852, it is doubtful if anyone realized just what an important book it was. There were only a thousand copies of the first edition. But it was soon reprinted, and by the time of his death, Roget, who lived to the age of ninety, had seen twenty-five editions of his work printed. And the book is still going strong today, a century and a quarter later. There is most probably a copy in your library. But if you use it, do so with care. Dont try to use all the words which Dr. Peter Mark Roget put into each of his categories. If you do that you may have to go back to the dictionary to find out what some of them mean. Question: This passage is most likely______.

A.a book review

B.an advertisement

C.an editorial

D.a special report
