听力原文: The British Prime Minister Tony Blair is expected to end months of speculation t
oday by announcing the date of the general election. According to tradition he would first go to Buckingham Palace to ask Queen Elizabeth to dissolve parliament. It's widely anticipated that the election will be held on May 5.

Many had expected the British Prime Minister to announce the start of the election campaign on Monday. But following the death of Pope, Tony Blair delayed his plans. The main theme of this election will be the state of Britain's public services, immigration and economy. Public opinion polls suggest Mr. Blair is on course to win a third term in office. But the main opposition parties, the Conservatives and Liberal-Democrats, are both hoping to exploit what they believe is a lack of trust in the government.

Why Tony Blair delayed his plan of announcing the election campaign?

A.Because of his poor health condition.

B.Because of the opposition parties' disagreement.

C.Because of the death of Pope.

D.Because of his poor preparation.

Some critics believe that the very concept of intellectual property is mistaken. Unlike ph
ysical property, ideas are non-rivalrous goods that can be used by many people at the same time without making them any less useful. The term "intellectual property" was widely adopted only in the 1960s, as a way to bundle trademarks, copyrights and patents. Those critics argue that today's rights are too strict and make the sharing of knowledge too expensive.

The paradox about intellectual property in IT and telecommunications is that it eases the exchange of technology and acts as a bottleneck for innovation at the same time. The whole system is in a stage of transformation. "Markets require institutions, and institutions take a long time to develop. Today, the institutions for a 'market for technology' are not well developed, and it is costly to use this market," says a specialist.

Ideas are to the information age what the physical environment was to the industrial one: the raw material of economic progress. Just as pollution or an irresponsible use of property rights threatens land and climate, so an overly stringent system of intellectual-property rights risks holding back technological progress. Disruptive innovation that threatens the existing order must be encouraged, but the need to protect ideas must not be used as an excuse for greed. Finding the fight balance will test the industry, policymakers and the public in the years ahead.

People once widely believed that intelligent life existed on Mars. The 19th-century discov
ery of what appeared to be geometric designs cut across the surface was taken as evidence. The lines were thought to have been a system of canals that had been built to irrigate the surface. It is now clear that "canals"—perhaps the most spectacular geologic features of Mars—are natural valleys where ancient rivers once flowed.

Another fragmented idea concerns the planet's seasonal changes in color. Once attributed to the rapid spread of some life-form, these shifts are now known to develop from the movement of fine dust in the atmosphere.

By the close of the 20th century none of the many experiments conducted by spacecraft had ever found persuasive evidence of life. Nevertheless, speculation continued over the existence of some form. of life, in either the present or the past. In 1996 scientists discovered organic compounds and minerals in a meteorite(陨石), consisting of Martian rock, that collided with Earth around 11,000 B.C. These compounds suggest that Mars may have been inhabited by organisms more than three billion years ago.

Why did people in the 19th century believe the existence of intelligent life on Mars?

A.Because the surface of Mars seemed to be geometric.

B.Because the lines were drawn across the surface of the planet.

C.Because a system of canals was thought to be there.

D.Because it was the Martians that built the canals.

Text 3

It is widely accepted that English is the global language of modern times. About three decades ago, French was recognized as the language of diplomacy (外交), and German was considered the language of science and technology. English now dominates(主导) not only as the language of science but also diplomacy, computing, and tourism.

Today, in terms of native speakers, Mandarin Chinese is the world′s largest language. Yet there are people who believe that China will become the most powerful country in the world. Some have even fixed the date as early as the year 2020.

At present, while English is more widely spoken than any other language, there are more people who speak Chinese than English due to the large population in China alone. If China does become a world power, there is no doubt that this language will spread worldwide.

As the controversy over which language will become dominant in the world continues, there are many who feel that the dominance of English is unique and irreversible (不可逆的 ). However, a separate study from David Graddol′s suggests that English′s dominance in the scientific area will continue. There is also an argument that the English language would be changed greatly by 2020 for various reasons. With the possibility of China rising as a world power,Mandarin could definitely challenge the dominance of English as a global language.

Which language is now considered as the language of diplomacy?

B.Chinese

C.German.

D.English
