听力原文: Scientists are gearing up for one of the most ambitious international research programs ever attempted: a decade-long exploration of the world's oceans to unlock some of the most closely held secrets of the creatures of the deep. Using sophisticated technology that was not available even five years ago, the scientists will rely primarily on the animals they want to study to collect the data needed to complete the "Census of Marine Life". Creatures ranging from blue whales to turtles will be fitted with satellite tracking devices that will record their every movement. The project, involving scores of institutions around the globe, is expected to cost upwards of $1 billion, and it will take at least 10 years. The scientists hope the research will tell us much more about a region of the earth we understand so poorly. That area, incidentally, covers 70 percent of the globe.

(33)

A.10 years.

B.20 years.

C.30 years.

D.50 years.

听力原文: Whales--or their ancestors--were once land animals. Scientists believe that they roamed the earth about 150 million years ago.

The land-dwelling ancestors of this modem king of the sea were hunters with legs and the jaws and teeth of killers. Their favorite hunting grounds were probably shallow waters near the mouths of rivers or off a level stretch of coast, for fish, both finny and shell, were then more plentiful in the water.

Ages passed, and it became easier for these creatures to swim than to walk; millions of years later they were able to do without legs altogether. Now their hind legs had shrunk so that mere traces of them can be found under the skin when a whale is dissected.

(33)

A.The largest sea creatures ever known.

B.Fish living in shallow waters.

C.Plant-eating land animals.

D.Meat-eating land animals.

听力原文: It was not until one hundred and fifty years ago that scientists learned about the existence of dinosaurs. Thanks to an English doctor and his wife, the door was opened to this zoological study. Reasoning that these animals' tremendous size must have made them terrible creatures, scientists combined two Greek words, deimos, meaning terrible, and sauros, meaning lizards, to form. the word dinosaur.

After many years of study, they determined that these beasts roamed the earth for millions of years, and ceased to exist some sixty million years ago.

Unbelievable as it may seem, not all dinosaurs were carnivorous, that is, meat eating. Many were herbivorous, or vegetarians.

By reassembling the bones found at digging sites, scientists have been able to reconstruct the skeletons and learn great deal about the dinosaur's living conditions. They have learned that dinosaurs inhabited not only the land, but also the water and sky.

(33)

A.Beasts.

B.Herbivorous.

C.Carnivorous.

Led by Professor Bharat Ramratnam, they modify the bacteria to cream cyanovirin—[28] a protein that protects the body from infection by microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The hope is to use the bio-engineered yogurt bacteria as the active ingredient in a foam, cream or suppository that can be applied before sex to prevent HIV transmission.

B.An effective way to deliver AIDS drugs.

C.A good strategy to prevent HIV transmission.

听力原文:With the development of science, scientists have discovered more about the world.

听力原文: With the development of science, scientists have discovered more about the world. Scientists say world coastal areas must prepare now for a rise in sea levels. No matter what action is taken, scientists say there are already enough greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to cause a major warning. As a result, scientists and government officials are focusing on how society might adapt to rising sea levels, changing agricultural zones, changing climates and other problems.

Already, state and local governments along the coast of the United States are starting to plan for a possible longterm rise in the sea level, and a few have taken action to cope with it. Agricultural researchers are developing heat-resistant and draught-resistant crops that might replace traditional crops if the climate changes. How long it will take for maximum warming to be reached is uncertain because the oceans slow such warming. Most scientists expect the maximum warming to take place by the second half of this century.

If levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere double, sea levels will rise; estimates of the average rise are from 1.5 feet to 6.5 feet. Some leading experts expect a rise of I meter, a little more than three feet.

(33)

A.Pollution of coastal areas.

B.Rise in sea levels.

C.Exhaustion of sea resources.

D.Earthquakes and volcanoes.
