Some time ago, I discovered that one of the chairs in my front hall had a broken leg. I di

dn' t foresee any great difficulty in getting it mended, as there are a whole lot of antique shops on Pimlico Road which is three minutes' walk from my flat, so I set forth one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop confidently expecting a friendly reception, with a kindly man saying, "What a charming chair! Yes, that' s quite a simple job. When would you want it back?"

I was quite wrong. I wasn' t too concerned;after all, it was only the first try and there are many more shops on both sides of the road.

The reaction at the second shop, though slightly politer, was just the same, and at the third and the fourth -- so I decided that my approach must be wrong.

I entered the fifth shop with some confidence because I had thought of a plan. The rather fierce shop owner looked it over carefully and said, " Yes, not a bad little chair, how much do you want for it?" "£ 20, "I said. "It's got a slightly broken leg, "I said. "Yes, I saw that. It' s nothing;don't worry about it. "

"What will you do with it?"I asked. "Oh, it will be very saleable once the repair is done, I like the bit of old green velvet on the top, I shall leave that, yes, very saleable. "" I' Il buy it, "I said. "Yes, I know, but I' ve changed my mind; as a matter of fact, it is just what I' m looking for. I' ve got a pair to it at home; I'll give you £ 27 for it. " " You must be crazy, "he said; then suddenly the penny dropped and he smiled and said, "I know what you want, you want me to mend your chair. "

"And what would you have done if I had walked in and asked you to repair it for me?" " I wouldn' t have done it, "he said. "We don' t do repairs, not enough money in it and too much of a nuisance, but I' ll mend this for you. "

The author was not worried about the broken leg of the chair at first because_______.

A.his flat was very near the antique shops

B.he knew it was easy to mend it

C.there were so many antique shops selling chairs

D.he thought it was easy for him to find someone to repair it

I graduated from university several years ago and now I am a university English teacher. Last week my department sent me to the airport to meet a visiting American professor. When I met him at the airport he had two heavy suitcases and some smaller bags. He was an older man, in his sixties I think, and we couldn’t find a luggage cart, so I wanted to help him with his luggage. Several times I offered to take one of the heavy suitcases for him, and each time he insisted that he could carry the suitcases himself. However, he seemed to be having some difficulty moving both of the suitcases, so at one point when we stopped and he put the suitcases down, I just picked one up. When I picked up the suitcases he said “I can handle these myself“, but I thought he was just being polite so I went off toward the van with the suitcase. However, when we got to the van he seemed annoyed with me, and he hardly spoke at all to me the whole way to our school. Why did he get upset with me? Was it wrong to try to help him with his luggage?

To: Christopher Reed From: Lauren Butler Re: Printer Dear Mr. Reed, I am returning m
y printer to your companys customer service department because it is not functioning again. I had sent the printer there to get it serviced a month ago and received it a few days later. I changed the printer drum at that time and it was fine for a week after repairs. But again the paper is jammed too often and I can see some lines on the printed page. The receipt states that it gives a six-month free service guarantee. So I assume that your company will service it without additional charge. If this is not the case, please call me at 365-8975. Otherwise, I expect that you will return the printer by June 15th. I am including the receipt from the customer service department. I truly appreciate your cooperation in this matter. Sincerely, Lauren Butler

What is the purpose of this letter?

Before I came to Finland to attend this meeting two weeks ago, I had no idea what kind of clothes I should take along. Fortunately, my friend Julia has been to Northern Europe. Yes, she was a great help. She bought me some warm suits and dresses, business type of clothes, of course, of dark colours. She also bought me some skirts and blouses so that I could wear the same clothes in several different ways. Lively coloured dresses will give me a nice change from time to time. She also helped to choose a very warm raincoat and a pair of boots. Oh, how lucky I am to have such a helpful friend. She saved me a lot of trouble.

第三节 短文理解2

阅读下列短文,从[A]、[B]、[C]三个选项中选择一个正确答案。

A few weeks ago, we decided to paint (油漆) the outside of our house. To save money, we decided to do it ourselves. On Saturday morning, we went to the shops and bought some paint and a number of brushes. We already had a ladder (梯子), so we were then ready to start. We began that afternoon with the back of the house. The next Saturday I went to a football match while my wife painted the front of the house. On Sunday we found that we could not open any of the front windows. We got them all open in the end but I broke three and they were very expensive to repair. Next time when we try to save money, I shall certainly pay someone to do the work.

Why did the writer and his wife decide to paint the house themselves? Because ______ .

A.no one else could do the work.

B.they didn't want to spend much money.

C.they only need to buy some paint.
