Interviewing Skills, by Hazel Conway
The aim of interviewing is to fill vacancies with suitable people, and Hazel Conway points out that if all interviewers were skilled, far fewer people would be given jobs they cannot do, and then leave soon afterwards. It is generally recognised that the cost of recruiting a replacement can equal an annual salary, but it is a weakness of Conways book that it does not deal with the costs that ineffective interviewing techniques can lead to.
Conway claims that the traditional question and answer interview between two people depends too much on whether the interviewer likes the candidate, and not enough on whether he or she has the skills necessary for the job.
Interviewing Skills usefully covers everything an employer needs to know about preparing for and holding interviews, such as researching the applicants work experience. Surprisingly, Conway differs from many writers in considering that applicants personal interests should play no part in decisions concerning appointments. Many might also disagree with the books ideas on how to reject unsuccessful candidates.
While Interviewing Skills would be helpful for someone about to interview job applicants for the first time, it has little to offer anyone experienced in the activity.
Hazel Conway claims that an improvement in interviewing would reduce staff turnover.

Section D Directions: Read the following text about the young generation’s performance in their jobs and choose “True” or “False” for sentences 26-35. The Young Generation Performs Better Many younger people are better when it comes to getting the job done than older ones. At least that is what management expert Stephen Denning says in his book “The Leader’s Guide to Radical Management ”. The role of managers has changed in today’s world. While the manager of the 20th century had to supervise people and teach them how to do things, today’s managers have to motivate their workers and get them to like their job. Denning points out that there are some areas where younger people fulfill these requirements better. For one, they are able to find information faster than older workers, who are not that familiar with how the Internet works. They can download data faster and install software quicker than older colleagues. A Stanford study has shown that younger people can write and communicate better than older ones, simply because they have been doing it since they were children. The study says that texting messages and staying online most of the time improves your communication skills. The younger generation is more mobile and flexible when it comes to changing jobs. They can adapt more easily to the changing world and take on jobs that do not depend on experience alone. Many young people start their own businesses if they find out that they can’t find a job. They often do this with little or no money at all. They often choose part-time jobs, just for the sake of being employed. Younger people have found out that there is no such thing as a secure job. And being older and more experienced is no longer the key to success. Many young people don’t care so much about how much money they earn and how fast they can climb up the ladder of success. They care about their quality of life. 41. What information does Stephen Denning’s book convey to readers?
A、Young men can perform better in their jobs.
B、Young men are superior to older ones.
C、Young men get better jobs than older ones.
D、Young men always fail to complete their tasks.
Hints for Reading Practice
1 Most of us can find 15 minutes or half an hour each day for some regular activity. For example, one famous surgeon always spent 15 minutes reading something before he went to sleep each day. Whether he went to bed at 10 p.m. or 2:30 a.m. made no difference.
2 "Speed Reading" courses teach students how to read more quickly. In such courses, teachers often ask students to find out how many words a minute he is reading. You can do this too: look at your watch every 5 or 10 minutes and write down the page number you have reached.
3 Obviously, you should not increase your reading speed if you do not understand what you are reading. If you find something you don&39;t understand in the book, or you cannot remember clearly the details of what is said, why not read the chapter again?
4 Take four or five pages of an interesting book you happen to be reading now. Read these pages as fast as you can. Don&39;t worry about whether you understand or not. If you keep doing this"lightning speed" reading for a period of time, you will usually find that your normal speed has increased.
5 Most paragraphs in an article have a topic sentence that expresses the central idea. The opening paragraph often suggests the general direction and content of the article, while paragraphs that follow expand or support the first. The closing paragraph often gives a summary of the most important points of the article.
Paragraph 2 __________ 查看材料
A.The organization of an article
B.Check your reading speed
C.A way to increase your reading speed
D.Check your understanding
E.Read something every day
F.Read extensively

America's liberal and conservative elites disagree about everything under the sun. from the role of God in the constitution to John Bolton's table manners. Yet on one issue they are as one: the country is going to hell in a hand-basket.
(41)______.
For liberals, Americans are suffering from epidemics of "traumas" and "syndromes". The left has always worried about the effects of rapacious capitalism on the American psyche. Listen to Mary Pipher, a bestselling clinical psychologist, on girls: "Just as planes and ships disappear mysteriously into the Bermuda Triangle, so do the selves of girls go down in droves. They crash and burn" Or compare William Pollak, a Harvard psychologist, on boys: "Our nation is home to millions of boys who are cast out to sea in separate lifeboats, and feel that they are drowning in isolation, depression, loneliness and despair". Half an hour listening to "Oprah" or browsing in a bookshop could produce a dozen equally depressing theses, expressed in equally dismal metaphors, about every, sort of American.
(42)______.
This literature is built on one huge assumption: that Americans are a fragile bunch. Forget about the flinty Pilgrims who built a hyperpower out of a wilderness. Today's Americans are so vulnerable they need to be shielded from competition. In their excellent new book, "One Nation Under Therapy: How the Helping Culture is Eroding Self-Reliance" (St. Martin's Press). Christina Hoff Sommers and Sally Satel of the American Enterprise Institute, detail the rise of an ever-proliferating profession of grief counselors, trauma therapists, syndrome specialists, stress-reducers and assorted degree-bearing charlatans.
(43)______.
This book has naturally garnered favourable reviews from fellow conservatives. Yet the right is equally prey to its own variety of crisis-mongering. Conservatives blame sin, rather than syndromes, and cultural decline, rather than economic dislocation. But many share the left's sense of human vulnerability, and a surprising number have a weakness for psychobabble. It is no accident that the most powerful man in the Christian right. James Dobson, the head of Focus on the Family, is both a child psychologist and a veritable fountain of social' science statistics.
(44)______.
For conservatives, the family is being battered by pop culture, gay rights and feminism. Rebecca Hagelin of the Heritage Foundation argues that, thanks in pan to the ubiquity of the porn culture, America has gone "stark raving mad" (to use the subtitle of her new book). Gloomy conservative groups issue toe-curling warnings about the "inexorable grip of homosexual lust" and "feminism's love affair with abortion, and lesbianism".
(45)______.
Is this really true? Take a look at most of the recent cultural indicators, and it is hard to know where to start with the good news. The proportion of black children living with married parents is increasing. The proportion of women with infants in the. workforce (the women that is, not the infants) is declining, meaning that more mothers are staying at home. Both teenage pregnancy rates and teenage abortion rates have declined by about a third over the past 15 years. For all the talk of "hooking up", a growing proportion of schoolchildren are waiting to have sex until they are older.
The good news is not confined to sex. Child poverty is down substantially from its high in 1993(whatever happened to the "disastrous consequences" of welfare reform?) So is juv
