The field current supply in older machines comes from a lower voltage direct current generator or exciter on the same shaft as the alternator. Modern machines however are either statically excited or of the high-speed brush-less type. The exciter is required to operate to counter the effects of power factor for a given load. The power factor is a measure of the phase difference between voltage and current and is expressed as the cosine of the phase angle. With a purely resistance load the voltage and the current are in phase, giving a power factor of one. The power consumed is therefore the product of voltage and current. Inductive or capacitive loads, combined with resistance loads, produce lagging or leading power factors which have a value less than one.
The power consumed is therefore the product of current, voltage and power factor. The alternating current generator supplying a load has a voltage drop resulting from the load. When the load has a lagging power factor this voltage drop is considerable. Therefore the exciter, in maintaining the alternator voltage, must vary with load current and also the power factor. The speed change of the prime mover must also be taken into account.
问题: The word “machines” in the passage refers to _____.
A.the direct current generator
B.the alternating current generator
C.the exciter
D.the prime mover
Which of the following statements is true according to the passage ?
A.With a purely resistance load, the power factor is zero
B.Inductive loads combined with resistance loads produces leading power factors
C.Capacitive loads combined with resistance loads produces lagging power factors
D.With a purely resistance load, the phase angle is zero
When the load has a lagging power factor this voltage drop is considerable. This sentence means that _____.A.with a purely resistance load, the voltage drops too much
B.there is a considerable voltage drop in the capacitive load combined with resistance load
C.when the load is the capacitive load combined with resistance load, the voltage drops to zero
D.when the load is the inductive load combined with resistance load, the voltage drop is fairly large
The exciter must vary with: ① load current ② the power factor, ③ speed change of the prime mover.A.①
B.②
C.①②
D.①②③

We have found that there is major obstacle that parents need to overcome in connection with TV viewing. Surprisingly enough, we are going to advocate that parents act rudely—at least as fat' as the TV set is concerned. Most of us have been socialized all our lives with the warning "Don' t interrupt when someone else is speaking." Yet our ancestors never imagined a mechanical visitor sitting in the middle of our home who talks without stop and never allows the listener an opportunity to put a word in edgewise.
During our research, we found upon questioning parents that they usually reacted to TV content they disliked or disagreed with by remaining silent. This brings to mind an old saying that parents might well be advised to consider, "Silence gives consent."
We advocate loud reactions and exclamations of disapproval when something is presented on TV which is in opposition to the family' s values or offends them in any way. Similarly, when a program is in accordance with the family' s views, parents should approve of its content and applaud loudly. There is much that Shakespearean audiences of old could teach us in regard to such spontaneous, public reactions. Silence is misleading to our children.
This process of direct intervention vocal approval or disapproval of TV content—is highly effective with young children, because they ant curious, lemming rapidly and ready to place a great deal of confidence in the information and attitudes of their parents and other significant adults, such as teachers. For teenagers indirect intervention is recommended, because this group is more resistant to adult statements and does not like to be "Iectured." Indirect intervention is the practice of making comments about TV to other members of the family, but in such a way that teenager is sure to overhear the comments.
Our research shows that through such parental comments of approval or disapproval, adults can dramatically influence the information their children receive and retain from watching TV.
We may infer from the first paragraph that parents______.
A.find that their children like to watch those sex or violence TV programs
B.hope that school or society can do something to control bad TV programs
C.feel that they can exert some influences on their children at home only
D.realize that there is a generation gap between them and their children

If you are buying a property in France, whether for a permanent or a holiday home, if is important to open a French bank account. Although it is possible to exist on traveller's cheques, Eurocheques and credit cards issued by British banks, the fees for these services can be expensive.
The simplest way to pay regular bills, such as electricity, gas, or telephone, particularly when you are not in residence, is by direct debit from your French account.
To open a current account, you will need to show your passport and birth certificate and to provide your address in native country. You will be issued with a cheque book within weeks of opening the account. In France it is illegal to be overdrawn. All accounts must be operated in credit. However, there are no bank charges.
Note that cheques take longer to clear in France than in Britain, and can only be stopped if stolen or lost.
The easiest way to transfer money from a British bank to a French one is by bank transfer: simply provide your British bank with the name, address and number of your French bank account. The procedure takes about a week and costs between £ 25 and £ 40 for each transaction, depending on your British bank.
Alternatively, you can transfer money via a French bank in London. You can also send a sterling cheque (allow at least 12 days for the cheque to be cleared), Eurocheques or traveller's cheques.
Finally, it is a good idea to make a friend of your French bank manager. His help can prove invaluable.
If you buy a property in France, you can save money by ______.
A.having a French bank account
B.transferring money from Britain
C.cashing traveller's cheques or Eurocheques
D.using credit cards issued by British banks
