第2题
听力原文:M: Hey, Jane! What's so interesting?

W: What? Oh, hi, Tom! I'm reading this fascinating article on the societies of the Ice Age during the Pleistocene period.

M: The Ice Age? There weren't any societies then--just a bunch of cave people.

W: That's what people used to think. But a new exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History shows that Ice Age people were surprisingly advanced.

M: Oh, really? In what ways?

W: Well, Ice Age people were the inventors of language, art, and music as we know it. And they didn't live in caves; they built their own shelters.

M: What did they use to build them? The cold weather would have killed off most of the trees, so they couldn't have used wood.

W: In some of the warmer climates they did build houses of wood. In other places they used animal bones and skins or lived in natural stone shelters.

M: How did they stay warm? Animal-skin walls don't sound very sturdy.

W: Well, it says here that in the early Ice Age they often faced their homes toward the south to take advantage of the sun—a primitive sort of solar heating.

M: Hey, that's pretty smart.

W: Then people in the late Ice Age even insulated their homes by putting heated cobblestones on the floor.

M: I guess I spoke too soon. Can I read that magazine article after you're done? I think I'm going to try to impress my anthropology teacher with my amazing knowledge of Ice Age civilization.

W: What a show-off!

听力原文:M: Ow ! That hurts !

W: What happened? Did you cut yourself?

M: Yes—on the edge of this paper. How can such a little cut hurt so much? I'm not even bleeding, but my finger really hurts.

W: You know, I read something about that. It turns out that a little cut on a finger can hurt a lot more than a big cut somewhere else.

M: Why? That doesn't make any sense.

W: Actually, it does. There are more nerve endings in your hands than almost anywhere else in the body, and it's the nerve endings that allow you to feel pain.

M: I guess that's true.

W: Also, a little cut like yours won't damage the nerve endings, just irritate them. If they were dam aged. you'd feel less pain, but the wound could be more serious.

M: So I suppose I should be happy my finger hurts so much?

W: Right. Now go get yourself a bandage.

M: Why? You just told me it's not serious.

W: It's not, but it does seem to be bothering you. Putting a bandage over the cut will keep the skin from drying and will help the skin stay together. If the skin stays together, the nerve endings won't be exposed, and the cut will hurt less.

Section B

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.

听力原文: Hi. My name is John Hilton. I'm your teaching assistant for Chemistry, Professor Smith's class. Let me explain a little about this lab section. It's a required meeting, twice a week. I expect you to do all the experiments and keep the results in your lab notebook. I' II collect the notebooks every two weeks. You' 11 be graded on your lab notebooks, your attendance, and quizzes. But the most important information I want to give you today is about the safety procedures.

First of all, you must wear shoes that cover your feet in the lab. That means you can' t wear thongs or sandals. Tennis shoes are OK. Aim, don't wear clothes that have loose, baggy parts, like long scarves and necklaces or loose belts. They could get caught in something or fall into a liquid.

Another important safety precaution is cleaning up. Be sure to put the waste in the correct containers. We call' t mix liquid with paper. This is extremely important. I don't want any fires in this room.

You are responsible for washing out your own lab equipment and putting it away. If you don' t do this, I will deduct points from your grades. I'm not going to clean up after you.

OK. That's about all for this meeting. Our first regular class will be next week. Be sure to get a lab notebook before then. Also, let Professor Smith know that you are attending this section.

(27)

A.Professor Smith.

B.A specialist in Chemistry.

C.A teaching assistant.

D.A university technician.

听力原文: If you plan to remain in the United States for any length of time, you will soon find it tco expensive to stay in a hotel and will want to find another place to live. As is tree in cities everywhere in the world, the farther you live outside the city, generally the lower the rents will be.

However, traveling to and from the city by bus, car, or train may make it as expensive as living in the city. Naturally, it is easier to join in the life of a city if one is close to the center. For this reason, you may prefer to live as close to the center of the city as possible. Or, you may prefer to rent a place for only a month or two until you become more familiar with the area.

Your best source of information about either houses or apartments is likely to be the local newspaper. Usually, the week's most complete listing of houses or apartments to rent appears in the Sunday newspaper, which, in many cities, can be obtained late Saturday night. Many people looking for houses or apartments believe that they have a better chance of finding a place to live if they have all the information as soon as possible. On Sunday morning, they are ready to call or visit.

(30)

A.Far away from the city.

B.In a small town.

C.Near the city.

D.In the city center.
