听力原文:W: Good evening and welcome to tonight's program, Our guest is the world-famous D
r. Charles Adams, who has sparked a great deal of attention over the past several years for his research in the area of language learning. Welcome to our program.

M: Ah, it's a pleasure to be here.

W: Now, Dr. Adams, tell us about your research.

M: Well, one of the most important keys to learning another language is to establish a regular study program, like planning a few minutes every morning around breakfast time.

W: Now, sorry for saying this, but your ideas may sound a little simplistic to our viewers. I mean I took Spanish in high school for four years, and I didn't become a proficient speaker of the language.

M: Well, I think there are many people feeling that way, and that's just it. I'm not implying that we can become fluent speakers in a matter of a few minutes here and there, but rather following a regular, consistent, and focused Course of study can help us on the way to the promised land of language mastery, and remember there is a difference between native fluency and proficiency in a language, and I am proposing the latter.

W: So what are some of the basic keys you are suggesting?

M: Well, as I just mentioned, people need to plan out their study by setting realistic and attainable goals from the beginning. I mean, some people get caught up in the craze of learning the language in 30 days, only to become disenchanted when they don't perform. up tO their expectations. And small steps, little by little, arc the key. For example, planning to learn five new vocabulary words a day and to learn to usc them actively is far better than learning 30 and forgetting them the next day.

W: Um-hum. I'm sure your ideas are beneficial to those language learners. Thanks for joining us.

M: My pleasure.

A.At a public forum.

B.In an auditorium.

C.On TV.

D.In a classroom

M: Well, as I just mentioned, people need to plan out their study by setting realistic and attainable goals from the beginning. And small steps, little by little, are the key.

W: Now you mentioned something about maximizing your learning potential by learning about your own individual learning styles. Can you elaborate on that?

M: Sure. People often have different ways of learning and approach learning tasks differently. Some people are visual learners who prefer to see models of the patterns they are expected to learn; others are auditory learners who favor hearing instructions, for example, over reading them.

W: Well, Dr. Adams. What is your learning style?

M: Well, I'm a very tactile learner.

W: You mean one who learns through hands-on experience?

M: Exactly.

W: Okay. We have just heard from Dr. Charles Adams, author of the book, Learning Languages over Eggs and Toast. Thanks for joining us.

M: My pleasure.

听力原文: Good morning. First I' d like to welcome all of you to this workshop on student housing. I' 11 go through the information about types of housing available for the fall and later hand out application forms. Then, if you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

There are three main types of housing here for you to choose from: the dorms, the family student apartments, and the international houses. As of now, there is some space available in each type, but they are filling up fast. You should get your application in as soon as possible. Let me explain some of the main features for each type of housing.

We have men' s dorms, women' s dorms, and coed dorms. Most of the rooms are doubles, with two beds, two closets, and two desks. We also have a few triples and a few single suites, but I think the suites are already taken. On each floor of the dorms there is a large bathroom and shower area. There aren't cooking facilities in the dorms, but you can buy a meal ticket for the cafeteria.

The family student apartments are grouped together near the north entrance to the school. Each apartment has a kitchen, a living dining area, and either one or two bedrooms. There is a fenced play area for children.

The international houses are a group of apartments for any students. They are organized into language and culture themes, and some of them have rules about speaking only a certain language during mealtimes. It's been a good way for students to learn about other cultures as well as practice languages. These houses are for all students, no matter how much of a particular language you speak. I think that Spanish House is full, but there are rooms available in all the other houses.

Well, that's the main information. I'11 pass out these applications now and answer your individual questions.

According to the speaker, what should the listeners do as soon as possible?

A.Find a roommate.

B.Hand in applications.

C.Go to Spanish house.

D.Buy a meal ticket for the cafeteria.

About a century ago more people would not have appreciated the study of a foreign language
as they do today. Gone are those days when patriotism towards one's own language was a major obstacle to learning foreign languages, a time when most nations were trying to throw their alien rulers out of their countries in their freedom struggles. Gone are those days when people were proud of their mother or father tongues and considered that their languages alone will suffice the need to survive. Language skills today have become as important as other business and career skills like IT, vocational or professional skills. Thus learning a foreign language today has become essential for an individual whether it is for careers, growing a business, or even to make an impression.

All that one needs to possess these days is a drive to learn a foreign language and there are all kinds of institutes and courses that teach various foreign languages like French, German, Spanish, and Japanese. Today's world economy has bridged the barriers of race, sex, color and religion and the world has become a smaller place. Today's businesses also demand language skills to expand and grow in other countries. Tens and hundreds of businesses world wide are expanding and growing their businesses by promoting them in countries other than their countries of origin. The tremendous growth of the Internet has further increased the demand for language skills. In Canada an official rule also says that all commercial establishments must have their websites created both in English and French, the official languages of the country.

Language can also ease race and border barriers. You are more welcome in an alien nation if you know the language of the people there and can converse in their tongue. People in these countries immediately respect you and think you care about their culture as much as they do because in any culture language is the key identity.

One of the reasons for not studying a foreign language in the past is______.

A.it was too difficult

B.it was not allowed

C.it was taught by foreign rulers

D.it was seen as disloyalty

Ladies and gentlemen,

It is my special pleasure to welcome our new staff member, Mr. Simon Anderson. He has come here from Australia. He has recently graduated from the North Bank University where he majored in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language). He is young and full of energy.

By having people like Mr. Anderson, who are willing to give up the comfort of their friends in their own country to come to a strange country, we feel we are very lucky and that our mission will be all the more easily realized.

Mr. Anderson, the other faculty members and the rest of the staff of this college join with me in extending to you our sincerest welcome. We are indeed happy to have you here, and we wish you all the best during the time that you are with us. Thank you.
