听力原文: Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but there have only b
een few players who were truly great. How did these players get that way—was it through training and practice, or are great players "born, not made"? First, these players came from places that have had famous stars in the past—players that a young boy can look up to and try to imitate. (32) In the history of soccer, only six countries have ever won the World Cup—three from South America and three from western Europe. There has never been a great national team—or a really great player—from North America or from Asia. Second, (33) these players have all had years of practice in the game. Alfredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player, as was Pele. Most players begin playing the game at the age of three or four.

(34) Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighborhood—a poor, crowded area where a boy's dream is not to be a doctor or lawyer, but to become a rich, famous athlete or entertainer. For example, Liverpool had one of the best English soccer teams in recent years.

All great players have a lot in common, but that doesn't explain why they are great. (35) Hundreds of boys played in those Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele. The greatest players are born with some unique quality that sets them apart from all the others.

(33)

A.South America and Asia.

B.Western Europe and North America.

C.North America and Asia.

D.South America and western Europe.

听力原文: Twenty percent of McDonald's fast-food sales are outside the United States. One
areas in which McDonald's is expanding successfully is Brazil, where 30 million to 40 million middle class people, most living in densely packed cities, provide a concentrated market for a fast-food chain.

There wasn't much difference between Brazilian and American McDonald's. The restaurants looked alike. The menu was more or less the same. A white paper bag, with yellow lettering, exactly like the take-out bags used in American McDonald's, carded several messages about how Brazilians could bring McDonald's into their lives. However, it seemed McDonald's Brazilian ad campaign was missing some important points about how fast-food should be marketed in a culture that values large, leisurely lunches.

Brazilians prefer their main meal at midday, often eating at a leisurely pace with business associates. Many firms serve ample lunches to their employees. Other workers take advantages of a two-hour lunch break to go home to eat with the spouse and children. Nor did it make much sense to suggest that children should eat hamburgers for lunch, since most kids attend school for half-day sessions and have lunch at home. The homes of Brazilians who can afford McDonald's products have cooks and maids to do many of the things that fast-food restaurants do in the United States. The suggestion that McDonald's products be eaten "while watching your favorite television program" is culturally appropriate, because Brazilians watch TV a lot. However, Brazil's consuming classes can ask the cook to make a snack when feeling hungry. Indeed much televiewing occurs during the light dinner served when the husband gets home from the office.

Most appropriate to the Brazilian life style. was the suggestion to enjoy McDonald's "on the cook's day off". Throughout Brazil, Sunday is that day. The Sunday pattern for middle-class families is a trip to the beach, liters of beer, a full midday meal around 3 p.m., and a light evening snack. McDonald's has found its niche in the Sunday evening meal, when families flock to the fast food restaurant, and it is to this market that its advertising is now appropriately geared.

Questions:

23.Which group of Brazilians are targeted by McDonald's in Brazil?

24.Which statement is true about the comparison between McDonald's in United States and Brazil?

25.Which of the following is NOT true about Brazilians?

26.According to the talk. what is McDonald's supposed to do next?

(43)

A.Children and teenagers.

B.City-dwellers of middle class.

C.Blue-collars in firms.

D.Brazil's consuming class.

of the anti-global movement. He's here to talk about the recent report, stating that by 2050 Brazil will be the one of the word's wealthiest and most successful countries. Alberto, what do you say to the report?

M: You know this isn't the first time that people are saying Brazil will be a great economic power. The same thing was said over a hundred year ago. But it didn't happen.

W: Yes, but you must admit the world's a very different place now.

M: Of course. In fact I believe there's maybe some truth in the prediction this time around. First of all, though, we must remember the problems facing Brazil at the moment.

W: Such as...?

M: There's an enormous gap between the rich and the poor in this country. In Sal Paulo, you can see shopping malls full of designer goods right next door to the slam areas without proper water and electricity supplies. A lot of work needs to be done to help people in those areas improve their lives.

W: What needs to be done?

M: Education, for example. For Brazil to be successful, we need to offer education to all Brazilians. Successful countries like South Korea and Singapore have excellent education systems. Brazil needs to learn from these countries.

W: So you are hopeful for the future.

M: As I said earlier, I'm hopeful. This isn't an easy job. We need to make sure that these important opportunities for Brazil aren't wasted, as they were in the past.

(20)

A.It is bound to regain its full glory of a hundred years ago.

B.It will be a major economic power by the mid-21st century.

C.It is a resolute advocate of the anti-global movement.

D.It will face challenges unprecedented in its history.

听力原文: Brazilians take pride in their Portuguese herit age, so to call locals Spanish Americans would be insulting. On the same note, Brazil's official language is Portuguese, not Spanish. Frequently, the spelling of Portuguese words is exactly the same as Spanish, but the pronunciation differs greatly. Before opening your mouth in this country, learn to speak a few words and avoid committing a cultural offence.

If your business destination is one of the northern cities like Rio, city of carnival and the samba, expect a somewhat casual environment. However, when scheduling meetings in southern cities, you'll find business settings just the opposite: quite formal. Bring comfortable semi-casual clothes for business in the north, and conservative dark suits or dresses for southern cities like Sao Paolo. Time is important to southerners and lateness is considered rude and un businesslike. In the north, however, your host may not always be so punctual. If you called a meeting at four, a Rio citizen, for example, may interpret gathering time as around four (like maybe four fifteen or so). Whatever you do, don't be put off or indicate that you were concerned about the late arrival: your South American counterpart won't understand.

Shaking hands and exchanging business cards begin any first business meeting in Brazil. At that time, introductions are made. Formalize your contact's first name by preceding it with Senhor, Senhora or Senhorita (Mr, Mrs or Miss). The surname is not generally used. Soon after this formality, the title is usually dropped at the request of your host. Once you've become friendly with Senhora Astrud, you would be expected to simply call her Astrud.

If you are indicating approval on a business matter, never give the okay sign of a ring formed by the thumb and index finger. This is an obscene gesture in Brazil. instead, close the first and shoot the thumb up. During the business day you will most likely be offered cafezinho, a very strong Brazilian coffee. Accept it graciously so as not to offend your host. If you don’ t like coffee, sip it slowly. People from the United States should never refer to their country as 'America'. It is better to say you're from the United States. South Americans, particularly Brazilians, find North Americans a bit egocentric when referring to back home as 'America', After all, Brazilians live in America too.

?You will hear a presentation. This presentation is about various kinds of problems occurring during doing business in Brazil.

?For each question 23-30 mark letter (A, B or C) for the correct answer.

?After you have listened once, replay the recording.

Brazilians take pride in ______.

A.their nation

B.their Portuguese heritage

C.their rich nature resources

SECTION B PASSAGES

Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文: When it comes to romance, women prefer someone who tickles their funny bone while men opt for those who catch their eyes, according to an international survey.

Australians and British men frequently admitted drinking too much, while about half of German and Italian men said they had lied about their finances. Eighty percent of Brazilian and Mexican men said they had lied about their marital or relationship status.

When it came to meeting that special someone, a majority of respondents preferred to rely on friends for introductions. The Internet was not a popular hunting ground except in Portugal, where about half the surveyed men and women opted to find people online.

Both Spain and France suffered a gender gap. Thirty percent of Spanish men, but no Spanish women, looked for love online. In France, 40 percent of men but only 10 percent of women attended parties, bars and clubs to meet someone, but they did have one thing in common: both sexes rated looks as more important than their counterparts in other countries.

When it came to first meeting, a majority of men polled said beauty was more important than brains, while women put a sense of humor at the top of their list.

Physical attraction was the top priority for men in France, Brazil, Greece, Japan and Britain. While 40 per cent of Portuguese men rated intelligence over looks in a first encounter, no Australian men did so.

According to the passage we know in Portugal ______.

A.Portuguese preferred to get partners through friend's introductions

B.Portuguese are more likely to hunt partner online

C.Portuguese said they had lied about their marital status

D.both man and woman put a sense of humor at the top of their list
