听力原文: When men first lived on the earth a long time ago, they had no proper place to live in. In order to get away from the heat of the sun, to keep themselves warm and dry, they found caves. Caves really gave them some kind of help. Some of these early men built their shelters up in the tree to escape wild animals. They had a hard life and had to go about from place to place for food. Much later on, their lives began to change. They learnt how to keep animals in herds. As they had to move their herds of animals from place to place for grassland, they had to build shelters which were easily carried about.

When they finally learnt the art of farming, they had to clean forests and started planting crops. After that, they had to think about building more permanent shelters. Old houses were built at first with wood and they even use grass as roofs. This went on for a long time. They kept making their houses better. Today, houses of all kinds are built. They are strong, permanent and can last a very long time.

听力原文: When my first wartime Christmas came, I was in basic training in New Jersey. At that time I was not sure if I would make it home for the holidays. Only on the afternoon of December 23 did I see the list of men who would have three-day holiday. I was one of the lucky soldiers. It was Christmas Eve when I arrived home, and a little snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door for me. I could see beyond her into the corner of the living room. There the tree has always stood. There were lights of all colors, shining against the green of the tree. I felt so warm and happy!

听力原文: This guy goes to a bar that's on the tenth floor of a hotel. He sits clown and has a couple of drinks, then stands up, announces loudly that he has had enough, and goes over and jumps out the window. Now, there are two men who are sitting at a window table, and having that natural human curiosity about the strange situation, watch as this man put himself to certain death. However, just as he is about to hit the ground, he rights himself, pulls his feet underneath himself, and lands gracefully. He then turns and comes back into the building. Naturally, the two men are amazed. The guy comes back into the bar, orders a few drinks, then repeats the process. The two men at the window seat are astonished! When the guy returns and repeats the procedure AGAIN, the two men stop him before he jumps and ask him how on earth he does that. He replies "It's simple, really. There's an air vent down by the ground, and if you catch the updraft, you can right yourself and land on the ground with no problems." Then he proceeded to jump out the window again. Well, these two men decided that they just HAD to try this, so they' jumped out the window, and SPLAT!—made a mess hitting all over the ground. Meanwhile, the first guy has made it back up to the bar. When he sits down to order his drinks, the bartender says "You can be a real superman—when you're drunk!"

听力原文:We do not know when men first began to use salt, but we do know that it has been

听力原文: We do not know when men first began to use salt, but we do know that it has been used in many different ways throughout history. Historical evidence shows, for example, that people who lived over 3,000 years ago ate salted fish. Thousands of years ago in Egypt, salt was used to keep the dead from decaying.

Stealing salt was considered a crime during some periods of history. In the 18th century, for instance, if a person were caught stealing salt, he could be put in jail. History records that about ten thousand people were put in jail during that century for stealing salt! About 159 years before, in the year 1553, taking more than one's share of salt was punished as a crime. The offender's ear was cut off!

Salt was an important item on the table of a king. It was traditionally placed in front of the king when he sat down to eat, important guests at the king's table were seated near the salt. Less important guests were given seats farther away from it.

(33)

A.To keep fish alive.

听力原文: Cambridge must be one of the best-known towns in the world, and can be found on most tourists' lists of places to visit. The main reason for its fame is its universities which started during the 13th century and grew steadily. Until today there are more than twenty colleges.

The oldest college is Peterhouse, which was founded in 1284, and the most recent is Robinson College, which was opened in 1977. The most famous is probably King's College, because of its magnificent church.

The university was exclusively for men until 1871 when the first women's college was opened. Another was opened two years later and a third in 1954. In the 1960s, most colleges opened their doors to both men and women. Almost all the colleges are now mixed, but it will be many years before there are equal numbers of both sexes.

What is the main reason why Cambridge is one of the best-known towns in the world?

A.Because it is a favorite place for tourists.

B.Because it has a famous university.

C.Because the town was started in the 13th century.

D.Because the university has twenty well-known colleges.

听力原文:American names are written and spoken with tile given name first real the family

听力原文: American names are written and spoken with tile given name first real the family name last. So John Smith's family name is Smith, not John.

In a formal setting, address men as "Mister", married women as "Misses", mad unmarried women as "Miss". These days many women prefer to be addressed using the abbreviations "Ms. ", pronounced "miz". If the person has an M.D. or Ph.D., they will often be addressed as "Doctor". Faculty are addressed as "Professor".

In an informal situation, Americans will introduce each other by their first name, without titles, and occasionally by just their last name. If you are introduced to somebody by their first name, you can address him or her by their first name the next time you meet. The only exception would be for someone who holds an important position, such as the university president. Unless they tell you otherwise, faculty should be addressed using their title and last name.

When in doubt, use tile formal manner of address, since it is better to make mistakes on the side of formality. It is always appropriate to ask how they prefer to be addressed.

Children should always address adults in the formal fashion, using their rifle and last name.

(23)

A.Family name first, given name last.

B.Given name first, family name last.

C.Middle name first, family name last.

D.Given name first, middle name last.

听力原文: When someone says, "Well, I guess I'll have to go and face the music", it does not mean he is planning to go to a concert. [32] It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this or that. Sour music, indeed, but it has to be faced. The phrase "to face the music" is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. Where did the expression come from? [33] The first information came from the American writer James Fenimore Cooper. He said--in 1851--that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage. After they got their cue to go on, they often said, "It's time to go to face the music". And that is exactly what they did--face the orchestra which was just below the stage.

[34] An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps unfriendly, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. So, "to face the music" came to mean having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you had no choice. The other explanation comes from the army. Men had to face inspection by their leader. [35]The soldiers worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean and shiny enough to pass inspection? Still, the men had to go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do?

(7)

A.Your boss's order.

B.Your leader's inspection.

C.Something unpleasant to be experienced.

D.Sour pop music.

听力原文: Father's Day was first observed in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. Mrs. Dodd first proposed the idea of a "Father's Day” in 1906. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, who was widowed when his wife died in childbirth after their sixth child was born. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself. Mrs. Dodd wanted Father's Day to be celebrated on the first Sunday in June, her father's birthday. But it wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation, declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national ceremony of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June, coming almost sixty years after Mother's Day had been proclaimed a national holiday. Today, Father's day has become a day to not only honor your father, but all men who act as father-like figure, such as stepfathers, unless, grandfathers, and adult males.
