Do not underestimate(低估) the power of revision in the days and hours before and examination. The closer you are to the exam, the more chance you have of storing and retaining crucial information. But do not overdo it.

(46) An effective daily routine can help you through an exam period, so in the days leading up to your first ex- am, get into the habit of being up and ready to work by game. It can be a shock to the system after months of working to your own timetable to be mentally alert at that time if you have not prepared for it.

On the day of the exam, have a good breakfast, pack two of everything you need (pens, pencils, erasers, etc. ), then make your way to the examination hall in good time. (47)

Once in your seat, simply pause for a few seconds and collect your thoughts. Close your eyes and take in a few slow, deep breaths to help you relax. When you turn over the test paper, spend a short period reading through all the instructions and questions, paying particular attention to key verbs such as "discuss", "compare" and "evaluate". (48) It is always wise to allow 10 minutes at the end of the exam to give your- self time to go back over your answers. Once you have selected the questions you wish to tackle, begin by attempting the one you think is your strongest. It will give you more confidence when you see a well-answered question down on paper. Also remember to write clearly, and do not be afraid to express the unexpected: after all, examiners can get very bored marking stereotypical(千篇一律的) answers. (49) If you do need something else to focus on to help you collect your thoughts, choose a fixture(固定设施) in the room, such as the ceiling or anything else that will not allow you to be distracted.

Finally, once you have finished, never hang around outside afterwards to attend the discussion by other students (50)

A. Try not to be tempted to look at those around you, or at the clock.

B. When you get home, read the examination paper through and look up the words you didn't understand.

C. Sleep, exercise and relaxation are all just as important.

D. Map out a quick plan of points you wish to make and how much time you should spend on each question.

E. Go and have a well-earned rest--then prepare for your next exam.

F. Do not arrive too early, though, as other people's anxiety can be contagious(传染性的), and you may suffer from undue panic.

Read with Greater Speed

Do you have difficulty reading in class? If so,a special reading program that helps match

sounds with letters could speed up your brain.

At least one out of every five elementary school students in the US has trouble learning t0

read, even when the students are good at other subjects.____(46)

Researchers from Yale University,US,studied a group of children from New York and

Connecticut State. As part of the study,37 struggling readers received special tutoring

Every day, instructors worked with them on recognizing how written letters represent units

of sound called phonemes(音素)____(47)

By the end of the school year, these children could read faster than before. They also made

fewer mistakes, and understood more of what they read than they could earlier in the year,

As part of their study, the researchers used a special machine to take action photos of the

students’brains.

___(48)This is the same part of the brain that becomes active when good readers

read. This activated brain area appears to include a structure that helps people recognize familiar written words quickly. In lower level readers, this structure remains inactive.

A year later, the brain structure was still working hard in the students who had gone through

the special tutoring, and they continued to do well in reading tests.___(49)

However, some researchers still doubt the study_____(50)

A Many adults are interested in matching sounds with letters

B The students also practiced reading aloud and spelling

C The biggest challenge for many of these kids, scientists say,is matching sounds with letters.

Lowering the Risk of Heart Disease

Like millions of other Americans, I come from a family with a histotry of the heart disease. My father had his first three heart attacks when he was only thirty-one. _____________(46) I grew up with heart disease. It was there, but I didn’t take it seriouly.

When I was thirty-one, my blood cholesterol(胆固醇)level was measured for the first time.It was 311 mg/dl, the doctor told me- an extremely high level that put me at a very high high risk of heart disease, especially with my family history. He sent me to the National Institutes of Health(NIH)to be screened for participation in a clinical trial._____________(47)

At NIH, physicians explained the degree of risk associated with my blood cholesterol level and the nature of the experiment. This test involves putting a tube through a leg artery(动脉) up to the heart._____________(48)

Learning about the risks of the experiment as well sa the risk associated with my raised blood cholesterol level scared the life out of me. Although I was excluded from participating in the study, the experience may well have saved my life.

For the first time, I began to realize the seriousness of high blood cholesterol.___________(49) But equally important, I got a taste of what it is like to be a patient, to have tests done on me and to think of myself as sick. This was hard to take.

This experience taught me two lifesaving lessons. First, although I felt fit and strong, I was actually at high risk for heart disease because of my high blood cholesterol level. And with my family histaory, it could not be ignored.________________(50)

A Second, I could lower my blood cholesterol level simply by changing what I ate.

B I was three years old at that time.

C There is not enough oxygen in the blood.

D It was a heart attack just waiting to happen

E The trial was designed to test the effect of lowering blood cholesterol on the risk of heart disease.

F The death rate for the test was only 1 in 100, I was assured.

The Building of the Pyramids

The oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids. __46__. There are over eighty of them scattered along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different in shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the '' step " pyramid and " Bent " pyramid.

Some of the pyramids still look much the same as they must have done when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or, more often, for stone to use in modern buildings.__47__. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last forever.

__48__. However, there are no writings or pictures to show us how the Egyptians planned or built the pyramids themselves. __49__. Nevertheless, by examining the actual pyramids and various tools which have been found, archaeologists have formed a fairly clear picture of them.

One thing is certain: there must have been months of careful planning before they could begin to build. __50__. You may think this would have been easy with miles and miles of empty desert around, but a pyramid could not be built just anywhere. Certain rules had to be followed, and certain problems had to be overcome.

A The dry climate of Egypt has helped to preserve the pyramids, and their very shape have made them less likely to fall into ruin.

B It is practically certain that plans were made for the building of the pyramids because the plans of other large works have fortunately been preserved.

C The first thing they had to do was to choose a suitable place.

D Consequently, we are only able to guess at the methods used.

E Many people were killed while building the pyramids.

F They have stood for nearly 5,000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet.

May kids who wet the bed are very deep sleepers. ___49___.

Vitamins are organic compounds which are present in certain foods and are essential to the health of men and other animals. __46__. Without these substances, the breakdown and absorption of foods could not occur. Certain vitamins participate in the formation of blood cells, hormones, nervous system chemicals, and genetic materials. __47__.Fat-soluble vitamins include vitamins A,D,E and K. The water-soluble vitamins include vitamin C and the B-vitamin complex.

Fat-soluble vitamins are usually absorbed with foods that contain fat. Excessive amounts of these vitamins are stored in the body's fat, the liver and kidneys. Because fat-soluble vitamins can be stored, they do not have to be consumed every day.

__48__. A deficiency of vitamin A leads to skin changes and night blindness, or failure of the eye to adapt to the dark. Vitamin A can be obtained directly from foods of animal origin such as milk, eggs, and liver.__49__.

Vitamin D acts muck like a hormone and regulates calcium and phosphorus absorption and metabolism. Some vitamin D is obtained from such foods as eggs, fish, liver, butter, and milk. But humans get most of their vitamin D from exposure of the skin to sunlight. A deficiency of vitamin D leads to bone problems.

The role of vitamin E in the human body has not been established. __50__ Vitamin E is found in seed oil and wheat.

Vitamin K is necessary for the clotting of blood. It is produced in sufficient quantities by bacteria in the intestine, but is also provided by leafy green vegetables and eggs.

The water-soluble vitamins, C and B complex, cannot be stored and therefore need to be consumed daily to satisfy the body's needs. Vitamin C is important in the formation and maintenance of connective tissue. It protects gums, skin, and mucous membranes. It is mainly found in fruits like oranges.

B-complex vitamins serve a wide range of important metabolic functions and prevent some diseases. They are found mostly in the liver.
