听力原文: Thank you for coming to this meeting for students who will be remaining on campus during the ten days winter break. As the dean of students, it is my responsibility to explain the vacation arrangements and to have you fill up the forms giving the dates you will be on campus. To reduce heating cost, Building 1 will be the only dormitory open. All the other dorms will close at five p. m., on Friday, February 7th, and will not reopen until six p. m. on February 16th. Once we have your completed forms, we will assign you a room in Building 1. Please move all the belongings you will need to your temporary accommodations by the 7th, as it will not be possible to reopen the other dorms during these ten days, once they have been closed. Most college facilities will be closed during the vacation. These facilities include the gymnasium, the college store, and the dining hall. The library and the computer center will be open, though on reduced schedule. Only the post office and the college administration offices will maintain their regular hours. Since I imagine most of you are staying here to finish up academic projects of one sort or another, let me wish you luck with your work. If you have any special problems, please do not hesitate to contact me at the Dean's Office.

M: Good. I'm going to Paris for about a couple of weeks.
W: Right, so how long do you want to leave the car with us?
M: Well, I'm flying to Paris on the 5th and coming back on the 19th -- that's fourteen days, isn't it?
W: That works out at fifteen days' parking, sir. Let me show you our ,scale of charges. We have a minimum fee of £ 6.50, but for fifteen days it would only cost you £ 24.75.
M: Hmm — fifteen. Ok.
W: Now, if you'll just come this way, sir, we'll complete the booking form. Could I have your name?
M: Brown. Donald Brown.
W: And the make of car, sir?

M: Yes, yes, the 5th, that's a Friday.
W: Friday, 5th of May. Well, we like our customers to check their cars in here at least twenty minutes before check-in time. We have a minibus to take you to the airport. It's only about ten minutes drive.

Sickness at work
Small firms are counting the cost of sickness among employees. Research estimates that illness cost small businesses in Britain a month and a half in lost (21) last year. A recent (22) of more than 1,000 small and medium enterprises revealed that last year the average small business lost around 42 days through staff phoning in sick, and that this had a serious (23) on 27 per cent of smaller companies.

(24) Of these, 9.5 per cent were ill for a week on more than one occasion. In Britain, employees can take sick (25) for up to a week before they have to produce a medical certificate. Owner-managers were far less likely to be off sick than their staff: 3.3 days on average, compared with the 10 days taken by employees.
The head of the research team said, 'The most common (26) of absence was minor illness, such as colds or flu, but back strain, fractures and the like (27) for very nearly as much. Of greater (28) is that more that 40 per cent of employers felt that their employees' sickness may not have been genuine.'
Employers can do more to protect themselves by drawing up adequate (29) of employment that outline the company's sick pay (30) Enhanced sick pay is then at the employer's discretion.

听力原文: A potato farmer was sent to prison just at the time when he should have been digging the ground for planting the new crop of potatoes. He knew that his wife would not be strong enough to do the digging by herself, but that she could manage to do the planting; and he knew that he did not have any friends or neighbors who would be willing to do the digging for them. So he wrote a letter to his wife which said, "Please do not dig the potato field. I hid the money and the gun there."
Ten days later he got a letter from his wife. It said, "I think somebody read your letter before it got out of the prison. Someone arrived here two days ago and dug up the whole potato field. What shall I do now?"
The prisoner wrote back at once, "Plant the potatoes, of course."
